    Vibration while turning

I'm playing around with a piece of cherry about 2 inches in diameter, 5 inches long in a SuperNova2 chuck. I'm turning end grain with a 3/8" Benjamin's Best bowl gouge. I have the tool rest set at 90 degrees to the bed. When I start the cut, outside to inside, I hear/feel vibration. I...

Is there a difference between a "Scroll Chuck" and a "Woodturning Chuck"?

Some people refer to any woodturning chuck (i.e. SuperNova2) as a Scroll Chuck. Other times / people refer to a chuck using Tommy Bars to tighter as a Scroll Chuck. In precise terms is a SuperNova2 a Scroll Chuck? What is the more generic term for all chucks?

    11/16 spindle 14 TPI

Hello, I bought a cheap wood lathe to get started on some projects I have always wanted to do. It is a 14X40 lathe and I have turned bats, bowls, and turkey calls on it so far. I wanted to try my hand at pens next. My spindle seems to be a step down rather than a Morse taper. Pictures attached...

Applying finish while on the lathe

From various videos I see that most people apply a finish while the item is on the lathe. Yesterday I was watching a DVD (Bat Houses by David Best) and he was using a painters brush to apply lacquer. Although he covered up the ways with a paper towel it looked like he got the lacquer on the...

Setscrew in chuck to hold chuck on spindle?

Most (all?) scroll chucks come with a setscrew that secures the chuck to the spindle. This seems necessary only if the lathe is in reverse since forward direction continually tightens the chuck. I bought a new adaptor for my old Nova Scroll chuck and it came with a setscrew. I also ordered a...

    Collet chuck of unknown manufacture

I have this chuck for sale but I have no idea who made it or if it is totally complete. It has several jaws and a 1-1/4x8 thread. If you know anything about it please reply. Make me an offer I can't refuse and it will be yours. I can ship flat rate for $13.60 to US. Glynn

High School Engineering group needs your help.

Hello all! I am a student attending my senior year of high school and am in the Purdue University PLTW EDD engineering class. We are required to design and create a prototype for a solution to a problem. Our problem is the wood-turning of non-radially symmetric or irregular shaped woods. -How...

    Eliminating chuck marks Q

I have been at turning for many years, just getting used to some newer bowl mounting methods. How do you all eliminate those annoying chuck marks on either ti interior expanding dovetail or the calmping onto a dovetail tenon. See the dimples on this mini bowl I turned today? I use the...

    missing chuck key

Trying to make the jump from spindle turning to maybe a bud vase or small dish. Found a used Oneway Talon, good deal, but the chuck key was missing. I figured it wouldn't be that hard to find one. I was wrong. Well- it was easy to find. But hard to pay for. $54 shipped for a new one...

    Turning finials

I would like to try my hand at some thin stuff like finials. I do not have a high quality chuck- HF three finger chuck. Can I use the headstock center and the live center to turn? What tool(s) do I need? Have a basic set of skews and roughing gouges. Thanks in advance.

    Supernova2

Can anyone tell me how the safety stops work on the jaws of the Supernova 2 chuck, and if they can easily be removed? I have looked at the instructions for dismantling and cleaning, which now seems to be ridiculously complicated, but its not at all clear how this is all put together, and without...

    Chuck won't stay put!

I'm in the process of building a custom fly rod for my grandson. A rodbuilding site I frequent had a photo of a bamboo rod with a bamboo winding check, that is, the part that makes the transition from the cork grip to the rod blank itself. I decided to give it a try with a piece of caragana...

Re-chucking without indentations - dead mouse pads

I love my Nova G3 Chuck with the spigot jaws. The serrated jaws really grab and hold while transferring all the energy of my 1hp Nova Lathe to the wood. For some projects, such as an espresso tamper however, a nicely shaped spigot is a finished part of the piece and it is tempting to...

    Nova SN2

I already have the SN2. Woodcraft is having a nice sale and I'm thinking of picking up 2 more so I don't have to change jaws as often. However, I want a strong/big chuck for coring large bowl blanks. I'm looking for input on the following: Does the SN2 with larger jaws have sufficient...

    The Frugal Woodturner

I picked up a copy of Ernie Conover's book The Frugal Woodturner. It has some great tips for turners on a budget. I found the advice on making pressure chucks, jam chucks, collet chucks etc. very informative. I have several different chuck jaws but it was interesting to see how to manage...

    Which chuck should I use?

I am turning some 3X3X12 pieces and making candle sticks holders out of them. The first two I used a worm screw and the tail stock. But when they are dry, I am not going to be able to remove the tail stock to cut the recess for the candle to sit in. The worm screw certainly will not hold it...
