Wings with a twist

Description: Wings with a Twist

Ancient Kauri 550mm square 20 inches.
I just keep having dreams of winged pieces .This work evolved from the Manta Ray to the curls to this .I am quite excited about this piece .It took me a while to plan . I knew it was possible but I kept coming up against a wall. A real teaser
The wings appear to drop off steeply in the picture, but they are more subtle .This piece was a beggar to photograph as it changes from every angle.
The inside of the bowl was first sanded with oil then coated with spray lacquer 10 coats.
The texture on the wings I used a very sharp ball bit on a die grinder, and then sanded by hand .Yes this took a while.
The colour was achieved by staining with black solvent based stain. While still wet I then airbrushed with 6 different colours .The effect came out just like Paua (abalone shell) 20 or more coats of lacquer were then applied until the surface appeared to have depth .I dont think I could achieve this colour again as it was a little like a mad cook in a kitchen add a bit of this and a bit of that until it tastes ok
The under side is textured as well sitting on 2 wings and one foot at the rear the piece has a bit of an attitude.
I have to admit that this is one of my favourites so far this year
What do you think Comments welcome
P.S yes the wings were turned with the skew L.O.L
This is a very nice piece. Id love to see it in real life so as to get a true feel for the color depth youve achieved. I like the attitude.

I know what you mean about being a beggar to photograph. Ive had that problem with certain works. Some forms just dont translate to 2D representation well.
