An inspiring piece of work Malcolm. This piece is beautiful. Did you make a special jig to taper the inside of each ring, or was it just estimation on each one?
Bud, you are quite right about the number 13; it is not necessarily unlucky. The Egyptians believed it was very lucky; in fact, they believed it represented immortality. Besides, my wife was born on the 13th.
Jeff, the individual ring angles were precisely sanded to the correct angle by passing them through a drum sander, while they were attached to an angled sled (tray).
Jim,
The turning is hollow, but not turned on the inside. When glued together, the rings were approximately 7/16" from inside to outside. After turning the outside of the torus, the resulting final wall thickness was about 1/4" (+/- 1/16")
