Nice indeed….I would guess that one needed significant counter balance and had some degree of pucker factor when being turned!
 
After a woodturning course in France with Jean Francois Escoulen some years ago, I invested in a Vicmarc eccentric chuck. This makes counterbalancing easy, because it has 3 arc shaped weights that can be moved around a a circular groove to minimize any out of balance. This is very safe. If using a normal scroll chuck and making up your own counterbalance system, you need to be careful to make the weights very secure .
