Spalted Maple Vessel

Spalted Maple Vessel

This is another I finished out of that sugar maple butt log that showed good spalting. It was quite punky from the brown rot on one side. Turned green. There was only slight movement while the pieces dried in the paper bag. The HF is spalted Sugar Maple, 5" tall x 4.75", turned thin, 5/8 opening. Oil finish. Thanks for looking!
George,

The birch here spalts like that too, however if it takes 90 days to spalt, it takes 91 days to turn to dry rot! Like most things in life, Timing is everything.

Great work showing off this terrific piece of nature!

Tom

Thanks for the comments Odie & Tom.

Tom, out white paper birch spalts the same as yours, very unpredictable. Out yellow birch is more consistent and forgiving.
