Lidded Vessel

6" tall, 4" wide Finished with shellac and linseed oil..
Regarding the finish, I sand up to about 1200. Then I use shellac and linseed oil. With the lathe stopped, I apply shellac to a soft cloth folded into a small pad. I apply the shellac to the entire surface, just to make sure that every area is covered. Then I turn the lathe on at a high speed. The key step then is to apply more shellac to the pad and a somewhat lesser amount of linseed oil on top of the shelleac on the pad. Then start at one edge of the turning and apply the finish, using substantial pressure so that the friction generates heat, mixes the oil and shellac and then hardens the shellac. I move the pad slowly across the surface, allowing the heat to build and cure the finish as I go. You may have to reapply the mixture of oil and shellac to the pad several times to complete the entire surface of the turning. The trick is to watch the surface right behind the application area to make sure that there are no remaining streaks as you move the pad slowly across the surface. I'd recommend practicing on a smoothe cylinder until you get the knack of it. You'll find the finish to be glassy smoothe and with a polished look.

This technique works best on turnings that are relatively smoothe and without sharp grooves or corners.

Give it a try. It's amazing how quickly you can get a nice finish.
