Geometallic Seed Pod

A piece inspired by math and nature. Form of the pod was inspired by the Buttonbush flower and the base leaves were inspired by the leaves of the same plant. The pod was turned on 32 axes, then carved and textured to create 60 equilateral triangular faces that form a geometric form known as a Pentakis Dodecahedron. Spikes were individually turned and added to the form.
Maple (pod), Cherry (base), African blackwood (spikes)
10"h x 7'd
Thanks Mark. the base started as an open form on the lathe turned to about 3/32". I then used a dental drill to remove all non-leaf and spent time smoothing and sanding before air brush work.
