Dyed Black Ash Bowl

Dyed Black Ash Bowl

After seeing all the dyed items lately I had to finally try it for myself. I have some small black ash cores from bowls that I had saved for enhancement practice and I felt these would be good for dyeing. This 6.5x2.5 bowl was dyed with Sumi ink, sealed with oil finish and then a coat of patinating wax was applied and rubbed off to leave the wax in the growth rings. A final coat of Renaissance wax was applied to reduce fingerprints. I am trying this on a few other pieces to see how it looks on different forms.
All comments and suggestions are appreciated.
very nice, i will look forward to your other forms with this technique

When I've tried dying, it seems to seep through the pores to the inside or outside, whichever I'd like to keep un-dyed.

George, are you applying a sealer before the dye?

Thanks Dale and Owen!

Owen, this is colored with Sumi Ink, if you Google it you will get all kinds of information. This ink dries quickly as it contains a slight amount of shellac. It does not penetrate as deep as dye and is black which is not the case with a lot of black dyes. I applied the ink and then sealed the ink before applying the wax.

George: Awesome bowl!

Very nice! The grain really stands out beautifully. Did you mix the Sumi ink in a shellac based solution or apply it straight?
