Stacked hemispheres
6” x 4”, flaming box elder burl and black walnut

Couldn’t resist keeping the natural edge of this flaming box elder burl intact, so I decided to turn a hemispherical hollow form with a massive void. It wouldn’t stand on its own due to obvious weight distribution issues, so I turned a smaller hemisphere from black walnut to use as a stand. The pieces are attached using 15mm rare earth magnets, so I can swap out the base if/when the urge strikes. Finished both pieces with T&T DO and buffed with brown tripoli.
Great piece and really inventive way you attached it. !
Thanks, Peter! Wish I could tell you that was the plan all along, but once I realized the box elder piece wasn’t going to be able to stand on its own, I had to come up with some way to anchor the base. Magnets seemed like a viable option ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
