Maple Bowl burnt rim

This is a maple bowl. I torched the rim and added some blue dye to the inside rim. The texture was put in with a Merlin tool with a chain saw blade.
A very fun project. It's 12" across and 3" deep. Finished with Tung Oil and Beall buffed on the bottom. Thanks for looking and all comments welcome, Don L.

As always, your work is phenomenal. I admit you've inspired me to try some dying. Do you tape the edges (sounds hard on a round object), do you turn any errors away, or are you just really really careful? Thanks for your responses to all my questions -

oh, and is it real tung oil, or polymerized (aka formby's or something similar)? I like the formby's finish; the real stuff seems duller to me.

Hi Cathy! Thanks for your comments and questions. I don't tape anything, as you said, I'm just really careful. The dye is applied with the lathe at it's slowest speed with a tightly folded up piece of a rag (old tee shirt). The Tung Oil I use is Formby's high gloss. Good guess! Don, this is a great looking piece! What is a Merlin tool and how did you use the chain saw blade? Almost looked like the piece was photographed spinning.

Hi Dale! A Merlin tool is really like a small grinder. The chainsaw blade is a small round chainsaw like cutter that spins on the end of it. Placed on a moving bowl, it makes patterns like this. Merlin is just one name for a particular manufacturer. There are others. Hope that helps.

Beautiful piece of work Don, Love the burnt texture. Another color combination that might look good, Pitch black inside rim with natural color edge or O.D.
