Will, Yes I use a urethane varnish (Mohawk) split 50/50 with mineral spirits. I only used one coat, applied with a brush and dabbed with a paper towel, on the beaded section as I did not want that to stand out with a glossy sheen but I needed it to penetrate over the entire bead and in the grooves to inhibit the moisture vapor exchange and provide a hard film finish for protection. I wiped on several coats of that same finish on the bowl and the back side.
