The video below shows how I turn a form for mounting on a faceplate to include turning the faceplate mount.
We had some discussion a while back on faceplates. There are lots of ways to use them successfully.
My method works.
Regardless of method it is essential the the outer rim of the faceplate makes continuous contact with the wood. If there are gaps the faceplate can rock and screws may loosen or pull out.
I mount my faceplates on concave surface so that only the outer edge of the faceplate contacts the wood.
A dead flat will work but a concave has advantages I like.
A slight concave is easier and quicker to turn, the concave holds the outer edge of the faceplate making it easier to center the faceplate, and the concave provides a little space for wood brought up by the screws.
By turning the mounting area on the lathe I can align the grain and the rim of my form before mounting the faceplate so they will be in alignment on the faceplate.
There are lots of ways to put faceplates,on but this works best for me.
The video is clip from a hollow form demonstration I did for Tri-County.
