The Square Spiral

15 x 15

from "Mother Earth Father Sky" by Tom Lowenstein

Hopi emerged from below, Masaw, ordered them to travel in the four cardinal directions until they reached the sea and then retrace their steps to find their homeland. This trek is commemorated in rock carvings. These rock memorials feature two spiral motifs. (1)square spirals to symbolize the turning back at the seas (2)round spirals, to show how the people wandered ever closer to their destination.
thanks for you comment.
Can you elaborate on your reasoning for the series?

after turning my Daryll and Daryll maple stump, i wanted to continue to turn outboard. i have been a fan of Nik Agar and won a raffle of a burnmaster. the question was what to burn. i enjoyed reading The Orion Zone, even suggested naming a new woodturning club the Orion Woodturners. The rest of the members did not think that others would want to join us just because they could see Orion also. anyway, since i wanted to turn outboard, have always been fascinated by indian lore, the crusades, etc, the subject matter was decided. did i mentioned i am from buffalo, one of the most important spirits. anyway i did the first one, looked at it, decided what i needed to change, did the next one, started buying books on half.com.......the series is time consuming, sort of like when you first started turning.....looking for wood, etc

hope that helps

thanks for looking
