Textured sycamore bowl

Textured sycamore bowl

11” x 4”, finished with Walrus oil and buffed with brown tripoli

Evidence that I make things other than shiny hollow forms 😅. Made this bowl as a housewarming gift for some friends who just built a new home. Their only ask what that the bowl could hold their remote controls, so I make the base a bit wider than I would normally, giving it a sort of “rounded ramekin” shape. Used a 1” burr for the texturing.
Jaramiah, the prominent narrow grain, burr striping, and large number of divots create a striking pattern, even with no added color or decoration. Almost dizzying in it's busy-ness. A wonderful effect.

Can you please explain "Walrus oil"?

Thanks, Dean! Took a while to get all of those divots in place, but time well spent I think :)

Walrus Oil is a brand name. It’s a combination of polymerized safflower oil, tung oil, and hemp oil. I use it for lighter woods, as I find it doesn’t yellow the wood as much as T&T Danish oil, but still takes a decent shine.

The accuracy and consistency of your power carving is spot on. Well done!
Thanks, John! Spent a good amount of time measuring and marking beforehand, which helped. I used a die grinder for the carving, which put my little compressor to the test. It got me through, though 👍🏻
