Costa-Hoffman-Meeks

This piece is inspired by a class of mathematical objects known as minimal surfaces. This a more complicated form consisting of a catenoid (like a nuclear cooling tower) pierced by a horizontal plane and pierced from each sides by 3 holes. Because of this amazing geometry, the structure has only 2 sides that I chose to accentuate by bleaching one surface. Wall thickness for the entire structure including the piercing holes is 1/8". Pictures cannot really capture the piece, it begs to be interacted with.
Bubinga, 9"d x 6"h, Maple pedestal.
Thanks Lou. This actually two photos of the same piece from the same angle, just flipped on the stand to show that there are only 2 surfaces and the piece is symmetrical in space.
