Chaco Tower

Chaco Tower

This is my largest Chaco Tower to date. It is about 8.5 by 24. It is very hard to find an Alligator Juniper Tree this straight that I can cut with my green wood cutting permit. I have changed up the way I color these pieces over the years from Prisma Color Markers to Transtint Dyes to now using dry pigment mixed with Denatured Alcohol. After coloring the piece is wire brushed to remove some of the color. This piece has both turquoise bricks and dinosaur bone bricks.
I love all of your Chaco Tower pieces. The coloring on this one is especially nice. I'm afraid that you'll have to explain what is a dinosaur bone brick ... I'm a little slow today ... could be the pain pills for my back. My wife asked me, "why is there an ear?" I replied, "that's not an ear", but she wasn't buying my weak rejection of her interpretation. As I said, I'm a little slow today. :)

Thanks Bill - My father was a rock collector and left me several slabs of dinosaur bone when he passed. I have been cutting them up into bricks and inlaying them into the brick pattern. The ear is a limb knot.

I’ve always been a fan of these being a Segmenter! This checks all the boxes Jim, great job!

Russ - Thanks I do do some segmented work but nothing as nice as your work. This piece is actually made from a single piece of Alligator juniper. The brick pattern is all carved with a Vortex air turbine tool. The only real segments are the turquoise and Dino bone bricks.

Your finishing techniques are simply fantastic Jim!! I eagerly await your next piece!
