wood "stain" fron Oneway vacuum neoprene rings

The vacuum system is OK but I frequently get black markings on the wood from the neoprene rings. Solutions to avoid this would be appreciated.

I put down two layers of blue painters tape across the bottom of my bowls. Protects from marks, but even better, gives me a greater seal and vacuum pressure. This will work only if you don't do your finishes on the lathe.

I use adhesive backed white "fun foam" on all my vacuum chucks.
Stick it on cut away the excess with skew or spindle gouge.
Push it down tight. We buy it at Walmart or Michaels. In 17x11 sheets or 11x8.5 sheets when they don't have the bigger stuff.

Bruce Campbell told me it is marketed as Joy Foam in Canada.
He also said his club bought a huge pack at a cheap price and even the color foams did not lave marks.

Al,

Oneway's chucks come with a black satin finish neoprene rubber ring already glued and taped on. I had the same problem with a Oneway chuck as the OP until I got the tip to put a piece of food wrap or a piece of a plastic grocery bag over the chuck with a hole poked in the middle before putting the turning on the chuck. It not only eliminated the black "skid" marks, but it also gave me a better vacuum seal. I make my own vacuum chucks now, and use with the fun foam or some gloss neoprene from scraps I have from making the air caster for my lathe. The additional plastic also keeps any errant sanding grit for working its way into the soft seal.

Mark,
the neoprene is a consumable. It will wear and need replacing.
The Chuck is an aluminum bowl and you get packs of neoprene to stick on the rim of the chuck
The fun foam will stick to the aluminum.

Yo, dey never gave me no "packs", man. But then I got rid of most all of my Oneway products after their treatment of Jacques Coulombe so I never needed to replace the neoprene. Since the seals on my vac chucks still give me 24"+ of Hg. I don't have the need to replace them. Have to admit, however, that I don't have a large need for them as I turn a bowl or platter only occasionally now. I can finish a jar ("hollowform" to y'all from Connecticut) just as easily and much faster with a jam chuck. 😀

I think they give you one and then you buy the replacements or use fun foam.
I make all my vacuum chucks but I bought my pump and starter kit of connections from ONEWAY.

I use a lot of jamb chucks too. Is do use the vacuum for holding spherical shapes to be hollowed.
