I was in the city today and just heading home and my wife said can we go to Widsor Plywood store and get some cupboard hinges to match the ones we got last year. I said sure and I am so glad that we did. Not only did we get a match on the hinges but they had a huge bin full of wood shorts that were selling for #1.99 lb.
The ones standing on edge are all cherry and the 4 pieces in the forground are beautifull pieces of clear and straight grained honduras mahogany. They came from a guitar manufacturing plant and they are what is left after cutting out solid wood guitar necks and heads and heels all in one piece.
I paid $86.00 for that little stash of wood and that included BC taxes of 14%. I know that some people because of their location will think that I paid a very high price .
But when comparing it with the price of those same woods around here if bought by the foot in a regular lumber yard , I feel that I got a real bargain.
As an example , 1 x 4 honduras mahogany which is actually only 3/4" x 3.5" is selling for $6.00 to $7.00 a lineal foot around here.
I needed some darker colored wood as a contrast to the mostly light colored ones that grow in BC where I live so these pieces will work great for segmented turning or anywhere else that contrasting colors make a nicer project than all one color.

thats not a gloat - this is a GLOAT

this load of Mahogany, Walnut and Oak, was given to me FREE, all of the wood was very old and dry, in the hopes of a hobby for the retired father, who never got around to playing with it. One board of mahogany was 28" wide!

I made several large segmented bowls for the family. still have a few boxes left.

I wanted to see what a piece of that honduras mahogany would look like if made into a box so I turned this one after lunch today. It doesn't have much in the way of a grain pattern but it sure is a wonderful wood to turn and sand and finish.
Wife asked me to make this one for her sisters birthday. It is 3" x 5"
