It's not like I need more green wood to do roughouts. But people keep cutting trees in this neighborhood. The cutters delivered this load to my driveway.

I happened to catch them just as they were pulling away from the worksite, and I bribed them $15 to haul it 1/2 mile to my house. The good thing is I didn't even have to lift any of it up! I've waxed all of them (anchorseal) and now all they need is the cozy touch from the chainsaw. This load should generate 30-40 pieces. :cool2:

Johnny on the spot

Isn't it great when things work as smooth as that.

Smooth talk might have a little to do with it also. 🙂

(And smooth greenbacks) 😀

Good going.

Looks like "black" flavor with a bit of ring staining. You should get some very nice pieces out of the lot.

Give those guys a bowl in return and it'll be the last $15 you ever spend on wood. In fact, you'll be begging other turners to come get some just soes you can get to your front door 😀

That's a capital idea Mark. I've got some "2nds" bowls with minor defects and problems. Those bowls are great candidates for the tree trimmers. Thanks for the suggestion! :cool2:

Do you know what causes the ring staining? I've had it on other free ash wood. Seems to happen on the big pieces.

Stain

You're gonna need an arborist for that one, Jeff. I'd sustect a micro organism or some mineral/chemical or environmental exposure during the particular growth year. It's different from spalting as the wood seems stained in the annular ring surface but not degraded. Have seen it in Jersey "black" oak as well. Presents a challange to do a form that works with, rather than against, the resulting lines.

Good luck!

M

BTW: Ask your trimmers to cut the bolts to a length the same as the diameter. That way you get to use the full radius if you want to.

black ash heartwood

Someone just gave me 2 three ft sections of black ash which I have never turned before, and on cross section, the heartwood has round tongues that project into the sapwood. Have made 2 natural edge bowls the last 3 days which are beautiful. Would send a picture but I have dial up from home and it's near impossible. Is this peculiar to this particular tree?? Gretch Flo

Thanks Mark. I gave my phone number to these new guys and asked them to cut 22"-24" lengths next time. These current pieces are 12", mostly so they could lift them. Most of these pieces are over 50 pounds, and their trailer had 5' walls.

Gretch - to post your picture there are 2 sizes on the forum.
- picture gallery limit is 80kb
- text forum limit (here) is 40kb

Once you downsize the picture, it will only take a minute or two to upload to the forum.
