Wig Stands

Wow this post really works, got reply really quick, thanks to Rocky Mountian Turners for specs on wig stand. Will also read all there newsletters,
thanks--Stan Olson

I've done a few, and both have been passed from the original recipient to another cancer patient. Most rewarding piece of woodturning/woodworking i've done.

Hello -
I'm a bit late to this thread but I was asked if the wig stands get mold on them from damp wigs being on them overnight or for a few days and, if so, is there a mold/mildew resistant finish that can be used?

Thanks!

Rich, can you explain why the wigs are wet? Is this typical of most wig users?

The ones my club donates we only use polyurethane on. Unless they are collaboration ones with some local high school art classes that decorate them then put poly to protect.

Someone said the poly is to keep the sweat from the wig causing issues.

Not sure if this link will work or not. I don't know if it's in a member only area.

We are working with a local agency that serves breast cancer patients. Their concern was over mold growth if a sweaty wig was placed on the stand or if a wig was washed and put on the stand while it was still damp. I don't know if this is a concern for most wig wearers but for the people undergoing chemotherapy, I would wonder if their concern is from having a weakened immune system from the chemo and being vulnerable to issues from mold or bacteria that may grow on a damp wig stand. I think we could use polyurethane or a CA finish, either of which can be cleaned, and address the concern but I was curious if anyone else had been asked to address this concern.

Thank you for the reply. The concern expressed to us was about mold growth from sweaty wigs or wigs that were damp from being washed. Polyurethane seems like the perfect remedy. Thank You!
