Why I wear a face sheild (redux)

Glad you weren't hurt by flying chunks.

Do you run any other air cleaner besides the airfilter you had on? I use a suction at source but don't have respirator. Just wondering how much stuff I might be breathing!

I have a DC at the lathe, plus a whole-shop air-filter.... I worry about those that do nothing to trap dust.

IFO's

Those Identified Flying Objects that occasionally occur while turning are best handled with a Face Shield. I'm glad you had yours on. My IFO hangs on the wall as a constant reminder.

I thought I was doing pretty good at catching the dust with my dust collector. Now I'm begining to wonder.
If you can smell the wood, then you are breathing a lot of it. Even if you can't smell the dust that may still be the case because your sense of smell may be desensitized from a lot of exposure to woood dust or smoking if you do that.

That bowl looks like Paduk, some of the dustiest, nasty, stuff I have turned.
It does really show up on the filters.
I skimped the other day while making blackwood ornament icicles.
Black boogers...yuck.
Even a tiny turning throws off a lot of dust.
A bottle of saline nose spray has become part of the after turning cleanup.

Yup, you should have seen the front of my jacket. But even light colored wood ends up in the same places, just not as visible.

I purchased a trend filtered shield after a man breathing with the help of an oxygen bottle, approached me at a show and reprimanded me for turning without a dust mask. Those "dust buggers" are just the stuff that did not get to your lungs. So, thanks n7bsn, for reminding us.

I was roughing out a 17" Mahogany bowl blank a couple years back. Working the outside just as I reached the top edge, I got a small catch. I heard two bangs. First when the 9" x 1 1/2" giant sliver bounced off something, then when it hit my face shield in the area of my left eye 😱 . I was startled and uninjured. I show the piece along with several other dangerous chunks at every turning class I teach. Wear your face shield!!
