Where to get a screw cap insert?

Not sure I know the correct words to call it but, I would like to turn a vessel for my brother who works for a distiller. Anyhow, I would like to turn even the cap and would the cap to screw on and off. I would think there is an insert of some sort that would go on the inside of the cap and the matching part on the outside, top of the bottle. (My goal is to turn a replica whiskey bottle with the labels and everything) Anyone have suggestions.

I tried to search it but not sure what to call it.

Have you considered chasing threads in wood?

Once upon a time, I think that Craft Supplies had something like3 what you want, but I haven't seen anything in a while. Another option is to buy some PVC couplings and nipples then cut them off and turn recesses in the wood to fit. That would give you a tapered pipe thread that could be used to seal the container. You could do the same thing out of brass, but it would be expensive unless you can find some junk plumbing fittings. There are threading jigs, but they are quite expensive. Hand chased threads aren't perfect, but usually good enough.

I watched a Captn Eddy video in which he was making a needle case for his wife. In that video Captn Eddy used an insert like you are looking to find. He gave the name of the company where he bought the insert but I don't recall the name of the company. If you look up Captn Eddy you will find a lot of his videos. If you email him. I'm sure he will be glad to help you out.

Or you could make one. Of course you either need a threading machine like the Baxter threader that I have, or you need to learn to hand chase threads.

Welcome to the forum, Bob.

Another option. You can buy screw together pill boxes at your local pharmacy. YOu could cut away what you don't need and will have some screw thread inserts. I haven't tried this yet but have made wooden covers for the pill boxes and they look great.

For something the size of the neck of a whiskey bottle, you might consider getting a nut and bolt that are the diameter you want for the threaded part. Turn the exterior of the nut round and epoxy it into the wood cap you turn. Saw off as much of the bolt that you want and embed it in the neck of the bottle. If you are going to hollow out the bottle, could drill out the nut. You could get steel, brass, bronze or assorted plastics.
Here's a picture of compartment I made for a whip handle using this approach.
