Well, while I'm waiting for my lathe, I think I'm going to order a video or DVD. Vinces gave me the idea to ask this question.

What would be your suggestion for a good video or DVD for a beginner? I'm interested in turning bowls, platters, pens, gavels, and some spindle projects.

Thanks,
Brad

Brad,

Don't think you'll find one that fits all those criteria, but if you'd like to start on bowls, I'll suggest Bill Grumbine's "Bowls Made Easy." I haven't personally viewed it, but I know others who have and have raved about it despite its 2-hour length, and I took my very first lesson in turning from Bill, so I'm familiar with his style, knowledge, and presentation. When you're about to buy your first bowl gouge, I strongly suggest you get the Ellsworth Signature gouge and David's DVD and sharpening jig on the tool to go with it. All three make life much more pleasant.

Can't help you with pens or spindles. 🙁

Good Luck

M

I have several videos, if you want to learn about bowls, I agree Bill Grumbine's TURNED BOWLS MADE EASY is the best I have seen.

I have both of these and learned a LOT

Bowls - Turned Bowls Made Easy by Bill Grumbine (DVD or video). Well done, informative and holds your attention. You won't go to sleep watching this one.

Pens - Basic Pen Turning by Bill Baumbeck. Excellent video or DVD for beginners, and others. He also sells stuff and he specializes in stabilized pen blanks.

Hope this helps.

My vote would go to the Grumbine video. It is super. Closly following is the David Ellisworth video on using his signature tool.

I can recommend Del Stubb's "Bowl Turning" without reservation. Also Richard Raffan's "Turning Wood."

I haven't seen Bill Grumbine's vid yet so I just ordered it :cool2:

Alan Lacer's video on the Skew. Any of Richard Raffan's videos, Turning Projects, and Turning Boxes .

Favorite Video, Chris Stott, hands down

In my opinion Chris Stott's First Steps In Woodturning can't be beaten. He has a very relaxed teaching style and any beginner will benefit from it. It's the kind of video that can be watched many times over and there's always something you missed. He also has one for bowl turning. If you're a club member, check their library.

Favorite Video

Del Stubbs for bowl turning. It's the origina, in my view the best. I still watch it from time to time, Just for inspiration.

Alan Lacer for his work with a skew

Richard Raffan for speed and production work.

Mike Darlow for technique.
