Answer to "What is it?"
Well, everyone certainly is creative, but no cigar.
The picture is of a black walnut stump. The tree was recently harvested by a logger with more than 40 years behind a chainsaw. To avoid splitting the tree as it fell, the logger first made vertical cuts around the butt at each flare, essentially making the tree cylindrical at its base. Thus, you see the vertical sections standing around the stump. That done, he then made the horizontal felling cut by pushing the saw into the tree at ground level.
Black walnut, especially top grade, straight grained trees have a tendency to split as they are being felled. With a tree worth upwards of $3000, splitting the butt log can really give you heartburn.
Nothing in the picture gives you any scale, but the stump is just short of 48 inches in diameter. I have turned plates and platters from the vertical flare sections.
