What grind do you put on Doug Tompson V Bowl Gauge

First, I want to say how much I love Doug Thompson tools.
I have his 5/8" V flute Bowl gouge and a 1 1/4" scraper.

With his scraper I've just put an equivalent of 600-800 grit !!!😀 finish on a cherry bowl gauge handle I am making.

I also like my V gauge. So far I've refined grind that it came with. It works great but I was planning to make longer wings to make more cutting edge for shearing cuts. What about you guys? What grind do you use on your V gauges? Does anyone put Ellsworth grind on them?

BTW I have a Crown Kryo 5/8" parabolic flute bowl gouge with Ellsworth grind but for some reason it does not perform for me as good as Doug's gouge. They are both sharp and honed.

Thanks,
Alex

I have used an Ellsworth grinding jig for 10 years or so. The grind on Dougs gouges came within about 1/2 of a degree of matching the grinding set up I have. The only difference is that the wings weren't swept back as much. A little extra roll when sharpening took care of that. I actuallp prefer a scraper for that finish pull shear cut to a gouge. Just feels better in my hands.

I have what I guess is my own grind. I like longer wings than some people do. This is my Thompson V 1/2" bowl gouge. I use the Wolverine jig and have the arm set to the 3rd V. I extend the gouge 1 3/4" from the jig.

Alex,
Do bring the wings back, IMO they work better. I can't grind them way back because some people don't want it like that. Over the course of normal grinding the wings do get longer... it just happens LoL

I acquired one of Doug's gouges early on with the intention of putting Michael O'Donnell's grind on it--very similar to Ellsworth grind. The darn thing cut so beautifully the way it came from Doug that I couldn't bring myself to regrind it. Within a few months I bought another Thompson gouge and did re-grind that one. As others have indicated--works great!

This thread has sat for a couple of days - so I hope it is OK to ask this question as it is a little off topic:

Why would one use a "V" gouge rather than the "U" shaped gouge that Doug makes? I own the "U" shape gouge and love it. But I think the "V" would not clear the chips as well.

Well, it is not really a "V", but that is it's name. The bottom is rounded like a "U", but the sides flare out like a "V" rather than turning upwards like a "U". Maybe I'll post a picture.
