Here you go, Charlie. It really is a full cord under that snow. The snow in front of the stack is a bit over a foot - packed.

wood pile

I don't know about this question Charlie, exactly why do you want to see wood piles ? Are you looking for turning blanks ?😉
When it stops snowing here, I'll take a photo for you. Not sure if I'll include my turning stock😉 LOL

wood pile

My neighbor
had brought me 4? pieces of firewood the last 4 weeks that her recently deceased husband had chain sawed for firewood(undenified wood). I have made a small ash bowl, a crotch figure ash . a reddish box elder bowl, and a spalted beech bowl, and a sassafras bowl. She also gave me some catelpa, freshly cut because tree was growing into another tree. These are "baby bowls (3-5" diameter). I have 6-8+ pieces of wood on my front steps I couldn't part to turn into the fire wood pile and waiting for me to turn. I have 2-3 small barn fulls of other woods to turn-"TOO MUCH WOOD TOO LITTLE TIME" . I get so excited with new wood, I just keep accumulating, and am currently trying to make small bowls out of the wood I am tripping over in the shop (AKA "laboratory"). As an aside my 2 freezers with meat are the same way!!!!!!😀 Gretch

warm

After the rain its warm and heading for hot, around 105F next week. Not real good for the wood pile 🙁

Outdoor or indoor piles ?😀

Outdoor is under about 1.5 feet of snow.

Indoor is safe and sound and fairly dry waiting for me to make some time to turn.

Warming up into the low 30's today, back down to 20's or lower for the weekend.

Stay warm !🙂

James, i just wanted to see the weather you are having or description of weather and the woodpile seemed to be a good spot 😀

Well it's been cold here in Tennessee but Saturday and Sunday were in the 50's and I was outside with a short sleeve shirt. That's going to end by Wednesday but I sure appreciate the break.

Weather reports coming in saying Tulsa will have upwards of 15"-18" of snow on top of 1/2" of ice.🙁 Starting tonight. Tomorow lows in single digits with winds of 30-40 mph.😱 Sounds like this is gonna be the storm of the century.

weather

gonna get 9-12 " tues/wed. Lots of wind making snow removal difficult. If I can't get into work, maybe I'll just hunker down in the basement heated with wood, and enjoy the lathe. Used my cub cadet 30 horse tractor and bucket tonite to move the 3-4 " that accumulated the last week on the long drive and in front of the 3 car garage. Have to make room to deposit the snow.
On a cheerful note, the days are getting longer!!!! Gretch

wood pile

Hi Charlie,
This is a part of next winters wood. Theirs about 2" of ice on it as of today.
It's Red Oak and still quite wet, or should I say frozen.🙂
I had to dig a path to my other pile, wasn't fun. We have a steel roof and when the snow lets loose, it's like an avalanche.
Gotta get some of those snow catchers installed.
I can get 4 cords under the deck.
You can visit my wood pile, or turning stock pile anytime you wish.LOL
Have a good day.
Jim

Last Friday, January 28, the high here in Colorado Springs was 64F. Today, Tuesday February 1, the forecasted high is -4F. That's life at 7,000 feet elevation...🙄

I sympathize with the folks who are getting more snow than they're used to. I was remarking how fortunate we are to escape the southern track this year when SWMBO the wise reminded me that we had not had a single day in the last dozen without an additional inch, three of them had three or more inches, and today has already deposited an extra six. No hunker, because we expect it. No wonder the snow looks deeper even though we haven't had a storm.

February hunker days when the wind howls and the snow builds and drifts are when I order seeds for my garden. It makes me think of spring, when not only are the days longer, they are warmer, and the girls and I will have started seeds before the snow's all gone.

What to do????

Hi Michael/ I guess that's one of the snowed in things to do-order the seeds. Also should start taxes!!!!.
Yesterday nite I plowed the 3-4 " of snow that accumulated the last week on the long drive way. Made wide path for future drifts,, Made a "road" for the 4 wheel drive old truck from the pole barn toward the road-just in case. I got done early from work this afternoon. They canceled MSU classes tomorrow, and we canceled the apts I had for tomorrow and rescheduled for thur. Got the stove going in the basement and made a nice ambrosia morter, for a morter and pestle-new for me. Done at 8 pm , just in time for seeing the fine heavy snow coming down. 'So tomorrow I use the body/tractor to clear snow and then play in the basement, then clear drifted snow, play in the basement, then clear drifted snow!!!!!!. Catch up time at work thur.fri. Keep warm. Charged up my power center just in case!!!! All this hype and we probably will get a couple of inches!!!! Gretch

Wish that is all we would have had. Tulsa broke a record with 14" of snow. The whole town is shut down. Scratch that, the whole STATE is shut down.😕 It's cold everywhere. I tried to play in the shop, but when you have to bundle up to go in the shop, it just isn't worth it.🙁

On a positive note, there should be no way Phil sees his shadow today.

Don't envy you using the bucket, Gretch. Since I had to have a backblade for the gravel, I tried to do with a backblade initially. I got the bucket when the daughter's wedding was paid off. With the end (YEAH!) of tuition payments this May I went for a blower. I don't have to push back and guess how far any more. More importantly, since I couldn't really push upwind (N), without it coming back, I was forced to push in stages to get it all far enough off the downwind side and hope I guessed far enough.

Only to be surprised, like April 5 of 07.

I had (have ) a ford 8 N tractor with a blade-ok for up to 5-6 ". I often would have to shovel my self from being stuck as the snow gathered under the tractor body-esp if it was wet. With my new tractor having a bucket as well as a blade, only got it stuck once last year trying to go the extra foot. I love the bucket as I can dump snow further without having to race all around the yard lifting the blade.
Got 9" and still snowing, but to quit soon. So not that bad. Wait til I see the drifts!!!!!Will woodwork til I have to got outside and the wind /snow dies down.
No Phil didn't see his shadow. Thank god!!!!!!! Gretch

Doesn't matter if Phil didn't see his shadow. Chuck is the only one that counts anyhow. 😀

The 8N would require chains even with loaded tires. My little Kubota is four pulling, all loaded, and turf tires on this cold snow. In the woods with the mud the cleated types are best.

If you haven't yet, consider a set of forks for the loader. Makes lifting logs for bucking a much easier chore, and even does a credible job scooping up brush and trimmings. About 300 dollars, but very handy. I find the light duty sufficient. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200319491_200319491

Great idea Michael-thanks for the link. May order this week end if I don't forget!!! May help too with the large bales of hay - a couple leases my pasture with 2 horses. Takes 2 people to roll out the 700#+ bale. Gretch

My 8 N had weighted tires and putting the chains on were PITA. Then I got brand new rear large tires and didn't have to do it. They still were a problem when I gathered too much wet snow under the body (chassis????) and "bottomed" out. Sometimes the 3 pt hitch was sluggish in real cold weather and didn't lift soon enuf. My cub Cadet is nice!!!! Gretch

you turning or burning that rack, Steve??????

Definitely burning, although a few years ago I figured out that if I didn't want one of my experiments to go to a pal, I had to cut it in half to go to the woodpile, otherwise my wife would pull it out instead of burn it.

It is time to buy some more firewood. Can't seem to get any good dry wood up here, anyone have a contact for north Dallas firewood? Non-super bowl official supplier?

Don't imagine wood down there comes at $90 a full cord - delivered. Doesn't pay to go into the woods on your own at that price. Every year there are a couple of folks crushed by trunks or beaned by branches around here.

Michael-I won't cut standing trees, except if they are 10" or less and need to "landscape" for a friend. Too many stories of dead people. A former student went to cut firewood, and his wife and son found him beneath a fallen oak. Last year, a friend's source of firewood went out cutting with his ? 50 year old son. Experienced lumber men. The old fellow saw his son get killed ( I didn't hear the details of how it occurred). So if the pros get killed, what am I doing by trying this???? So I don't ..
BTW Michael. I am paying $100 a full cord in 8 ft log lengths.(get a double load every 2-3 years-20 cords) Dealt with the same guy from 2 hours away since 1986. He gave up his rig and needs to "borrow" (rent?) and I pay more due to diesel costs and living 2 hours away. So he's honest and I get premium oak and sugar maple, with a little hickory and beech at times. Gretch

There no woods to go to here. Big city, swimming pools and movie stars.
