I am interested in starting to turn bowls. what size lathe is a good one to start out on. I am looking at a shop fox 8x12. is that too small. please help.

Where are you based out of, Snatch?

The best way to get started is to show up at the nearest AAW club meeting and ask for some mentoring. This will get you through that awkward "what do I buy?" stage, where we all end up getting tools that look great and either suck or aren't that useful. It will also get you through the "kaboom" and "wow, look at this great Pabuoombagoda bowl blank I bought for just $100" stage.

Welcome to the Vortex,
Dietrich

I second what dkulze said. Find a chapter of the AAW.

Any lathe can turn bowls. The question is how big would you like to turn? Also how big is your wallet.

Snatch,

I'm going to give you some advice that I wish I had gotten when I started. Dietrich and Penmaker's advice is as sound as it gets at this stage of your interest. Click on this link to the home page and find an AAW chapter nearest you. http://www.woodturner.org/community/chapters/members.pl?submit=Chapter+List Call, email or what ever, the contact for that chapter and go to the next meeting you can. There you will find lots of friendly and helpful people whose further advice will save you a lot of time, frustration and quite likely some money as you delve into this wonderful pastime.

You will likely be able to try lots of different lathes, tools, chucks, sharpening systems etc. You will also find one or more turners willing to mentor you as you determine if this addiction is for you. While you're doing this, save your money because if you get caught up in this vortex you'll begin to act as though you won the lottery 😀 .

Welcome and good luck
