This is a piece that was design on the fly. I had a piece of elm from another project that I wanted to get out of the way and this walnut blank that had been in my shop for 3 years. It was a shallow sort of blank, so I proceeded to make a shallow bowl.

The color of the elm looked like a good contrast with the walnut, and as I got into this one, I decided on a more enclosed rim and undercut to highlight the color differences............just a spur of the moment design choice.

This one is 7 3/8" wide and 4" to the top of the knob.

Nicely done Roger!

In addition to the contrast between wood species, I also like the proportions between the height-width, as well as the size of the lid relative to the maximum diameter.

The piece works as an 'aesthetic only', as well as as a utilitarian piece of the owner is so motivated.

Added the image to my "inspiration" folder.....thanks for posting!

Great pairing of woods!!!

Thanks Rodger!!! I think your pairing of walnut and elm is just about perfect...nice choice!!! They definitely work very well together plus your turning design fits just about perfectly. Thanks for sharing, have a wonderful Christmas and safe turning to you always!

I can only agree with the others. I like contrasting wood colors. Thanks for sharing and the great pics.
