There isn't any way I can go to the AAW symposium this year. It's not that far from me but having just bought a new house and having to pay to build a garage and recondition the existing garage into a shop there simply isn't enough money. I've made a lot of friends on the various forums and it's great to actually meet them at the symposiums. I'll look forward to hearing about all the great people and happenings. I'll be at the Georgia symposium in September so maybe I can see some of you all there. Have fun and post a lot of photos of the cool stuff at the symposium.

John,

I'll keep you "posted" 🙂

Too bad you aren't going to be there. I was hoping to run into you and at least say hello and thanks.

John, is there any chance that you will make it to SWAT? How about anybody else? I am registered and have a room at the Hilton. I heard that the Hilton was already booked before the end of May. Of course, there are several other nearby hotels.

Bill,

I'm hoping to go to SWAT too, but won't know until I get closer to mid-July. I may make the loooong drive down from friends' house in Grapevine rather than staying in the area.

From here, Waco is almost 1½ hours, maybe a bit less now that construction on I-35 is essentially complete and traffic moves along very fast. From Grapevine you might need to add nearly another hour because I-35 traffic through the middle of Fort Worth is now a mess due to construction. You could stay at Twin Peaks in Waco, I hear that they aren't very busy these days. Grab Hu and drag him along with you.

Wait a minute John, I am traveling all the way out there and you won't be there???? Shucks! Oh well, I will just have to have fun without you. I had wondered if you might be interested in demonstrating at the Oregon Woodturning Symposium in March of 2017. They were taking names. I will most likely be in Atlanta for next year, and for sure in KC the following year because I have family in that area.

I'll make Atlanta, do or Die. My parents live there so I have a room reserved and it's a 4 hour drive so gas won't be too bad.

John, looking at the map, from where you live to Atlanta- it's all downhill. You should get great gas mileage. 😱

John If I remember correctly it's downhill, uphill, downhill, uphill, down hill, slight uphill, then loooooong downhill.

It's the gas mileage going back...

Bill what is the situation as far as campgrounds go in the Waco area? we travel in a motor home and won't need a hotel room.
Thanks '

Bill if you go out there they may not let you come back. Hope you will have fun when you go.

I used to travel to SWAT with a club member who had an RV and we stayed at various RV parks in Wichita Falls, Temple, and Waco. We stayed a couple times at Quail Crossing RV Park southwest of Waco and I think that it is nice. It is out in the country and the two times that we were there, there were only a handful of other RV's. They have a bath house, water, electricity, sewer, cable TV, and WiFi. Nothing fancy at all, but then it was just a quiet place to sleep without a bunch of bright lights and noise. If my recollection is right, ti is about twelve miles from the convention center. There are a couple RV parks on I-35 north of Waco. I-35 RV Park says they are in Waco, but they are much closer to West -- about 12 or 13 miles from the convention center. Being on the the Interstate there is a lot of traffic noise, lights, and a big crowd. Another one that is a bit close, I believe is called Northcrest RV park. I drive through Waco a lot and from what I can tell, it is primarily permanent residents. It is also on the Interstate, but it looks nicer than the I-35 RV park. The Waco North RV Park, despite their name, is actually north of West and would be almost 30 minutes to the convention center. Unlike Wichita Falls, there aren't any really close places to the convention center. The Heart of Texas Fairgrounds says that they have RV hookups. I've never been there and don't know anything about it, but I suspect that it might be parking on a big asphalt lot at the fairgrounds. They might not be open if there isn't anything goin on there.

I found this rating of RV parks: http://www.rvparkreviews.com/regions/texas/waco

The Quail Crossing RV Park ranked only average because it didn't have a pool or meeting room and other amenities while I-35 RV park ranked much higher, but people complained about traffic noise, etc. Another thing I noticed is that Quail Crossing now has permanent residents. It has been several years since I was last there so things may have changed. So, I guess that you have to choose what seems to fit your needs the best. I have stayed at the Hilton for the past several years which make things really convenient.

There is a tiny but good BBQ place, Rusty Star, near the intersection of Texas 6 and FM185 (road to Crawford). It would be close if you are staying at Quail Crossing. Of course, Waco has a bunch of good eating places within walking distance of the convention center.

I am with you John. My symposium turned into new decking on one of our decks. Our Canadian dollar is now at 25% deficit too, so it gets to be a even more expensive trip.

Jim Seyfried empty bowl donation

I was lucky enough to purchase a fantastic bowl donated by Jim. Hard to believe I got it for $25 at the empty bowl booth today!

Jim, this is such a fine bowl. And it is quite large, as you can see. Sitting on table at our room here at the hotel.

I'm very pleased you bought my bowl Mark, I think it is great to know who got it too! I was just taking Steve Worcester's advice and didn't take one from the bottom of the pile. 🙂 I was looking for your bowl, but evidently I wasn't quick enough getting there.

Gretch, The friend that I got the wood from said it is elm.

Hi Jim.

It's a beautiful bowl. It's on the middle of my dining room table.

I wish I had been able to look you up while there. Lots of people and awfully hard to find anyone. Maybe that would be something the future symposiums (symposia?) could figure out: A sort of "connection station" where for example, if we wanted to, we could post our schedule and then hunt each other down.

I think Steve had good advice there. Met him at his booth and had a nice talk. It was a great time, and I'm proud to have been lucky enough to snag your work!

John Ellis got my bowl. So I "sold" my first piece of work 🙂

Nice bowl. Jim is such a nice guy to boot!!!! Is it Cherry???? Gretch

Hey Gretch. Thank God Jim chimed in because I didn't really know what the species was 🙂

Nice rings, well defined and the finish is terrific.
