This is my first Hollow form. Made out of BC Grown Black Walnut. It's 12" tall and 5.5" at it's widest point. Wall thickness is a 1/4" or less.
Finish is Tung Oil with 2 coats of Antique Paste Varnish, with a finishing rub of wax.

Comments and suggestion please.

Very nice work. Looks beautiful. I've never heard of paste varnish. Where do you get it. I am taking a break from varnishing an audio rack using Captain's Spar varnish.

Varnish.

Dennis, mine is from a company called Swing Paints in Montreal. Circa 1855 Antique Paste Varnish. It's a bit thicker than normal varnish. Goes on very well and leaves no brush lines.... Thins with Mineral Spirits, very little smell.
Thanks for your kind words.

Oh, I read it as paste not past and was thinking it was a paste like car wax. I love the smell of Captains!!!

Dennis, one of my strong points isn't spelling....You are right, it is paste like wax but not that thick. It just doesn't run like normal varnish

It took me 4 yrs to finish my first HF....

Nice work. You did much better than I did. My first HF went into the burn box twice before I finally had gained the patience and skill to save it. My mistakes were 1) a really bad catch because my piece was large and I didn't have the correct support (i.e. steady rest). 2) Broke the tenon off hollowing it out...probably dull cutter and being too aggressive.

Happy turning.

Chip, I hear you, I have dreamed of doing hollow forms for years but never had the courage to try. Then I started reading about all of these hollowing aids that are out there and thought "This can't be that hard"
So I made up a Hollowing system and put a laser on it. I was right, it isn't that hard. Getting the correct cutter is the biggest challenge.

Don't give up...
