First a bit of news: A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with a very high risk, very aggressive form of cancer. They have a scale called a Gleason score. It is like golf. The lower the score the better. The scale ranges from 0 to 10. My score was a 9.

I will be having surgery Mar 12. After I recover from the surgery, I will have chemo and radiation. I fully plan to beat this thing and I intend to keep on turning. However, if it seems that I am absent for a while, you will know why.

Second, and this is what really has me upset, is this: I have decided to listen to the Universe and what it is telling me about my turnings. My wife and I did a one day art show this past Saturday in downtown Indianapolis. Set up was friday and a reception for the museum patrons was held friday evening. Of course, Friday afternoon, we received 5.5 inches of wet snow! This undoubtedly contributed to the low turnout on Friday evening.

Saturday was better but only marginally so. We did sell 1 bowl and several of my wooden balls. Since this was our 38th anniversary (Feb 14) I decided to treat my wife to a weekend away from the house by putting us up at a nice hotel in downtown Indy and taking her out to a really REALLY nice restaurant Saturday after the show. When the dust settled the show-lodging-food-jury-booth rental exceeded sales by over $350.00! (I displayed one piece that was touched and stroked and oohed and aahed by so many people ... if they had paid $ 0.50 each to touch it, I would have made a profit!).

This has been happening for a couple of years now. I can't afford to keep doing this! So, as of now, and with my wife's heartiest concurrence, I will no longer be doing shows. I will have to find some other outlet for my turnings ... I may even be giving some away just to make room for new ones.

Of course the other lesson the Universe may be trying to teach me is that my turnings are just plain not worth anyone buying them. If that is the case, I may have to rethink this whole turning business.

Hate to hear the health news. Keep fighting. As I'm sure you are aware, attitude has so much to do with recovery. Prayers for you and your family.

Dick, best of luck to you on your upcoming surgery and medical treatment. As Scott said your positive attitude will go a long way in helping to beat that monster. We will keep you in our prayers.

Art is a funny lover. Sometimes she will love you back and other times she will turn her back on you. Just because she turns her back doesn't mean that you work is not good. Sometimes it just takes awhile for her to realize that what you do is really good. Don't let the ***** get you down. Keep the same positive attitude that you have about your health and let it care over to your turning. Just remember the words that Annie sings in "Tomorrow."

God bless you and good luck. Keep us posted on your progress on both fronts.
Steve

keep up your spirits

Dick,
You have the mindset to succeed at anything you try.
Best of luck,

Al
Dick,I am so sorry to hear abut your cancer but your attitude ,I feel< is just about the best thing . Don't give up for you never know what can happen.
As far as selling goes, you must think people would be lucky to buy your work. Price has nothing to do with people purchasing you bowls. I have found that if they want it, they will pay for it no matter what the price. I ran an experiment once where I cut my prices in half. They didn't sell any better there. The right person comes along and it is gone.
Keep up your turning for it is in our blood. No matter what, I will turn. we all have boxes of bowls and will continue to gather them. Those are just treasures waiting to be found.
Good luck and keep making chips. Gary

Dick, don't rely on the drugs, etc. to get you through this. I've seen it many times that people who attack their illness have better outcomes than those who somehow expect to be "made all better" by the doctors. Do whatever you need to do to maintain a truly positive, if not aggressive, mental attitude.

Go for the cure!!

Best wishes, Dick. Over the last couple of years, I've seen first hand that they've managed to minimize the adverse effects of cancer treatment. Go get 'em!

Best wishes and our prayers for you with the upcoming surgery and treatment. Your positive attitude is a great start toward complete recovery.

We pray that you receive a touch from the Lord's mighty hand. I know he can do all things. May God Bless and Strengthen You.

Hoping the best for you Dick

Your work speaks for itself, and any low sales on a bad-weather day do also. Best of luck in battling what you have to. I've long admired your work and dedication, and that mindset speaks well of someone facing such a challenge.

All the best to you my friend. You obviously have the right mental attitude to deal with this problem.
Also keep turning so your mind is in a positive mode. Above all else, your wife will be with you all the way. Let her help you.

I hope your surgery goes well and you recover well also. It sounds like your wife is very supportive and your attitude is positive. Once some one told me that when there are hard times it is best to surround yourself with things and people that you love. I thought that was good advice. If you can turn for your own pleasure and not worry about selling it may be comforting. I am in several galleries and have sold very little so far this year, but there are always new things that are fun to try just to do them whether or not they sell. Keep positive.

Best wishes.
