Janice Levi's Ornament illustrates some of the best woodturning skills and pyrographic techniques today.
If you've never turned a sphere before, try it. Not as easy as one would think, and her globes are always exceptional. They are also hollowed, to complete the delicateness of an ornament that one would hang on a tree. Exceptional spindle work in her long thin finials. The right amount of bead to cove proportioned nicely. Often, a turner can get carried away with too many details on a finial, and it tends to distract the eye.
Janice has been doing pyrographic designs for years on her turned work and has taught this along with woodturning at several craft schools around the country. She will also be a demonstrator at the AAW's Annual Symposium in Chattanooga, TN next month, sharing her pyrography techniques and surface embellishments. I know there have been several threads on this forum from people looking for help and advice on how to do this work. Attending the Symposium and her rotations is a great way to learn and chat with a well-known maker and accelerate that learning curve.
I am pleased to select her ornament for Turning of the Week, May 30, 2022.
