My choice for Turning of the Week for October 17, 2022 is “Spiral Flutes” by Barry Richardson.

This is a beautiful piece – great form on the vessel, and the carved flutes and sanding/finishing look to be perfect. I like how the concavity of the flutes accentuates the grain of the Mulberry, and the Blackwood details are a nice contrast to the color and swirling grain of the vessel. Although Barry is a little light on the details in his description - I would estimate the vessel to be in the 14”-16” range, which is pretty impressive for that amount of carving and sanding. In my opinion, the finial is appropriately sized for this piece, and the added contrasting foot kind of ties it all together. Well done, Barry.

Thanks for the honor Tom! A few more details; I hollowed it through both ends and it is a little over 20" tall, finished with lacquer. Our menber Hughie posted a tutorial on making spirals on turnings a few years ago, based on his instruction I gave it a try, and have made several since, I think this was my most ambitious though...
