Turning a log...

Some of the comments are a hoot!

Interesting, but I'm one who lets others do those kind of things......I can do things to kill myself, without inspiration from anyone else! 😛

How about this one:

As long as we don't see you in a YouTube video where you are saying, "hey Bubba, watch me do this".

Not likely, Bill.....😀

I might do a video someday.......but, it's not high on my priority list. 😛

How about you, Bill? You done any videos?

I thought about it since I have several cameras that can shoot video, but the ones that I have tried are really bad. A couple years ago, I tried to sign up for an account on YouTube, but for some reason it ran into a problem. I kept getting a message that I was already signed up which is not correct.

There are many innings left.

When I played ball I enough hits for a great batting average 🙂
but coach ruined it by giving me too many at bats.... :-(

Is it just my imagination or is the tool that he is initially using bent where it joins the handle?

No bevel rubbing foolishness for that guy ... just ram the tool into the wood. I think that I see how he might have bent the tool.

All i can say is wow!

My lathe is similar age and construction, though not as long (any more, apparently it was at some point).
I've had a few 500lbs pieces on there, but nothing like this. I'd need some extra strength Depends!

And then i had, speed control. So when the lathe starts flexing or moving, i'd slow down or back off.
I had an escape route! If that log came loose...well, think dough roller.

And his motor keeps tripping.
No problem! Just hit the reset and keep jambing the chisel in there.

Definite Darwin awards candidate!

That's nuts

I round large logs all the time for my hollowforms. I can't conceive of any tool other than a bowl gouge presented level and resting on a substantial rest.
The guy in the video may not get hurt but an orthopedic surgeon will be in his future.

Seems to me that a bit more time spent with a chain saw to rough it closer to round would be time well spent.
I don't see why you would want to beat yourself up like that.

Here's another one along the same line....

Yeah that is not a whole lot brighter than the last one. At least use chain saw not handsaw to bring the sides flatter.

The turning is the easy part. Unless you have a few friends that can man the cameras and then someone else to edit it.

One of the problems with YouTube is there is no safety committee, no peer review, and no one who reviews anything.

so many times I have to quit watching because the methods are so unsafe it makes me queasy.

bill you've got it all wrong, you need to worry if you hear, "hey man hold my beer and grab the camera"

You got that right, Chris!......which brings us to Steve's post here:

Nothing against the good videos on YouTube, but I wonder how many accidents have actually been caused by these "instructional/informational ill-advised, and otherwise dangerous" videos? 😕 Maybe there ought to be some sort of "safety committee" as Steve suggests......in an attempt to keep some unknowing newbie from killing himself!......heck, even some of the "experienced" turners/craftsmen are susceptible to some of the dangerous things the quacks attempt to do! 😱 In some cases, I'm sure, it's probably the things that are edited out, that are more troubling than what the videos portray as the results. It's easy to misrepresent, and too many of these amateur video makers are more interested in self-aggrandizement, than they are of passing on information that would be useful.

I like the videos because they work better than hand outs for demos.

Engineers Dilemma: You can never idiot proof anything because, as soon as you do, some one else invents a better idiot.

Yea, some scary stuff out there.

Thats how people qualify for the Darwin Awards...

And if the woodturning stuff scares you, try looking at the motorsports videos. 🙂

All kidding aside, even showing the scary stuff has value.
We get to critique it here and educate people. "hey! Don't do THIS at home!"
🙂
