Hi I'm new to turning. In a couple of weeks I'm going to my local chapter of AAW & join. I would like to buy some good DVD's on turning. Can someone give me some advice on which DVD's to buy???

I don't want to start my turning career with bad or dangerous habits.

Thanks Chuck 😀

Chuck,
Most likely the AAW chapter you will join will have a lending library of books, videos and DVDs for members to borrow. I would start with that if it's available. Also, most chapters have a mentoring program so be sure to check into that for learning from more experienced turners.

Best of luck

Cyril,
As far as what the girl told me at woodcrafters they just let them use a room.
But I would like to purchase DVD's & books that I can look at myself.
Lending library is a good idea but i'm looking to purchase. Any ideas?

Chuck,
If you're interested in bowl turning look and Bill Grumbine's DVD "Turning Bowls Made Easy". You may also want to check his web sites.
http://www.wonderfulwood.com/
http://www.enter.net/~ultradad/
Both his personal and commercial sites may offer some insights. Many people also like Richard Raffan's books etc. Here is another site with lots of articles available http://www.woodturningonline.com/Turning/Turning_articles.html#jigs

I guess it all depends on what kind of work you're intrested in doing as to which books etc. will be helpful.

Note that I'm not associated with Mr. Grumbine or any of the other turning media producers.

In you want the full range of potential you can get with a bowl gouge, David Ellsworth's DVD on his "Signature Gouge" is unmatched.

DVDs

A few I have been impressed with recently are:

Turning Green Wood by Michael O'Donnel (http://www.woodturning.uk.com)

Any of the DVDs by Jimmy Clewes (www.jimmyclewes.com)...Jimmy's work should be known to some of you. He has made several trips to Provo, Utah, to demonstrate.

I would agree that Chris Stott's are excellent, as are Richard Raffan's, Ray Jones' & Reg Slack's.

I know the bias here is for UK turners, but I have less experience of US turning DVDs. Although I have been a fan of Bill Grumbine's website for a number of years, and if his turnery, as depicted there, is anything to go by, then his DVD should be excellent.

I hope you find what you want. There's so much choice!

If you are a NooB.................

I would recommend you start with a sharpning book and a DVD or Video. A good book is by Leonard Lee (Lee Valley.) It covers sharpening of all edge tools used in woodworking not just turning. I have not seen enough DVD's and sharpening Videos to suggest any one over another. 😎

If you haven't got it Richard Raffan's "Turning Wood" book and DVD are excellent for starting -- I pretty much taught myself with these! Chris Stott is great as well as Jimmy Clewes... but I would definitlely recommend "Turning Wood" to start with. His "Turning Projects" and "Turning Boxes" are also excellent once you get going!

I agree with all the above. I taught myself to turn with Raffans book Woodturning plus video and his video turning boxes. If you are going to do bowls you can't get much better than Bill Grumbine. Chris Stott's video on box turning is excellent.

Amen.

If you want to do bowls I would recommend Del Stubbs "Bowl Turning." Great for a newbie. He breaks down the process into easily understandable steps, shows you in slow motion the mechanics of why your gouge wants to dig in and how to avoid it. Raffan does bowls in his vids too but he's just so damned fast that he glosses over some really important info a newbie needs to know.

And let's not forget Alan Lacers Skew Chisel vids too for spindle work.

Dvd

Get Bill Grumbine's DVD on turning bowls. Even if you never turn a bowl there is some great info and it's very entertaining.

I'm a "self taught" turner and I cleared up a ton of questions and bad habits with this DVD.

:cool2:

You saved me some work

Recon thanks for starting this thread. I've been dabbling at turning for some ten years. Now I've decided to actually "learn" how to turn. I was actually thinking that maybe I should invest in some good DVDs. Now I know which ones to start with, and I didn't even have to got to the work of sorting through them. LOL 🙂
