I hope that everyone takes a minute to realize that I am honoring Keith as I think his turnings are outstanding. This turner of the month will be an on going thing, with a new one every month. This is in no way an advertisment for my site, and I feel a little sick that some would perceive it as such. I have space on my website that I wanted to dedicate to the turners that make this hobby so great, turners that I feel need some more recognition for their hard work and their craft. If you feel that someone should be nominated, then by all means e-mail me to let me know. If you want to complain to me, e-mail me for that as well.Charles E-mail

An Alternative

Mr. Martin,

It's laudable that you choose to publicize and highlight a turner's work, and I hope you continue to do so. However, your website is a commercial venture. You are, of course, free to advertise your business. But there is likely to be a problem when you act in such a way that tends to tie the two activities together by drawing people to your venture through a link posted on a site like this one where no commercial advertising is allowed, even in the Want Ad section. This site and forum is paid for and maintained by AAW member dues, and is free to all who wish to log on, including non-members. The ban on any commercial use, including members selling their turnings, must be strict and strictly enforced lest the AAW's charitable status with that Federal-Agency-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named be impaired.

May I suggest that you establish a different site, unconnected and unlinked to your commercial venture, through which you can highlight deserving artists? I think you would also benefit your goal and be more likely to garner quality "nominees" if you removed the issue of whether you were doing all of this merely to attract customers. Perhaps I'm being a bit cynical, but I don't think overly so.

Something to consider.

Both Steve Worcester and I (Jeff Jilg) discuss any actions prior to taking them. In the recent past we've had a variety of problems. At this point we find it better to approach a problem quickly, vs getting multiple complaints or having extensive dialogs with posters over problems.

I think you probably meant well with your initial posting but the initial posting could have also been construed as an advertisement link. Let's get past this and we hope you will continue to participate in woodturning discussions on this forum.

options

Hi Charles,

If this is truly an endeavour to honor turners and not to advertise, here's a low cost option for you. See if your host provides you the option of subdomains (example: featured.yourwebsitenamehere.com) This creates a whole separate folder that can be directly linked to and will act as an independent site, however doesn't require you to open a whole new web account. You can even purchase a second domain from places like GoDaddy.com for about $8 and point that domain that the subdomain so your visitors would type something like: "www.featuredwoodturners.com" and be able to visit the independent featured woodturner site. The subdomain option allows you to create a mini-site with it's own home page, etc. So you can still maintain this endeavour and avoid the suggestions that it's for advertising purposes for very little investment over what you already have into it.

Hope this helps,
Chris
