Trouble with Nova SN2

I remember a thread about some problems with a Super Nove 2 chuck, but was one of the problems the part where you put the T-handle wrench in stripping out, The chuck is only about 6 months old, and I'm not sure if I registered it with Nova or not. Fortunately the socket on the opposite side works fine, I thought it possibly was the chuck key stripping,as hex type keys are prone to do.
Has any one else encountered a problem like this?

Ken,
I had that same problem two months ago, wrote the company and they sent me two free replacement parts toat striped out. It is easy to take apart or just use a large alan wrench on your fittings and that will also work.
They were very good to me and sent the pieces right away. Gary

Gary, Thanks very much, I love the chuck, and it doers get tightened down pretty hard, I guess any thing will destruct with enough force..😱😱

You certainly do not need to do more than snug the chuck. Overtightening hurts you in two ways - chewing up the hold and the hole.

One complaint that folks make fairly regularly on the SN2 is the hex ball stripping out. Seems to me proper engineering would make that soft, the fitting harder metal. Recommendation always seems to be saw it back to a standard hex. I've still got two Novas and two Supers. Tommy bar holes are a bit elongated on the regulars, but things still work.

Sn2

The drive pinion is about $11 from the service center in Fl. Saw off the ball and don't overtighten.

I have 5 SN2 chucks all with ball end hex tee bar wrenches. I find over time the ball heads will wear and on a couple of them I have ground the ball off. As the Tee bars have a good amount of length grinding them down wont really have any detrimental effect. The loss of ability to use the Tee Wrench at various angles does not bother me either

As to whether this is a design fault, I doubt it. Ask any body who use these ball end Allen Wrenches for a living and they will tell you that the balls will wear away with constant use and are replaced often.

I agree they could made from much better steel, but I suspect the price would go through the ceiling and the manufacturers would have less replacement sales. 🙂

I suspect it all boils down to the fact that the ball has a smaller contact area than the conventional Allen wrench and so wears quickly.
