I am rebuilding my sharpening center to include a Tormek T7 wet grinder. And re-purposing my 8" dry grinder/Wolverine sharpening system for just reshaping tools.

My question for the forum has anyone worked out the settings on the Tormek for a 1/2" John Jordan gouge? I've come close, but the performance with use was much different.

I've seen "hints" that the Jordan gouge grind is very similar to the Elsworth grind. (Irish Grind?) But having never seen/handled a Elsworth gouge I'm not sure if I could use those settings.

Has anyone had any experience in setting up a Tormek T7 for grinding a Jordan gouge?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, there's nothing really unique about one of my gouges. Its just a side ground gouge. The end bevel angle is around 55 degrees, and the side angle is quite vertical which gives a very sharp/acute angle on the sides. The long edges are flat in profile and the length of those edges should be about the same as the diameter of the tool. Here's a picture of one of my gouges as ground when Doug Thompson makes it. I would add a slight bit more length to the edge before use, but its the only picture I have on my laptop. It would also be a little less rough-Doug knocks them out pretty quick.

I can't help with settings, I just set it to make it like I want it.

John

Dave,
You may not want to spend any extra, but the Don Geiger set up makes moving from the grinder to the Tormek a very easy move. I had it all set up and have used it, works great. I don't have it set up anymore as I'm moving to a belt grinder. The Tormek does put a wonderful edge on the tool.
