Would like to buy new tool rests, several sizes, for my Jet 1642. Looked at Robust, but seems post may be too long. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Tool rest for Jet 1642

I have a Jet 1642 and three different tool tests from Robust. All fit well.
I have 4 tool rests....1st square bar stock I use with elbow tool locally made....
2nd stock jet
3rd i used with multi-axes wall stuff
4th 4" robust fits fine and I probably use @ some time on all turning

The post can be cut off to the length you want. I have 5 Robust tool rests and really like them.
Most of the tool rest makers can make the post in various lengths.
For bowls, consider Robo Inside Rests.

i like the J rest for inside larger bowls.
You need to order the right length post.

Call Brent at Robust and tell him what lathe it's for and he'll make one if he doesn't have one on hand. They have lots of choices.
Once you turn on a rest that has the hardened drill rod, kind of like a variable speed lathe compared to a pulley lathe, you will never want to go back. Robust does make posts in variable lengths.

Agree with Robo - drill rod topped rests are much better than any of the alternatives. Cast iron dings too easily and the large dia rods move the tool contact point with the rest further away from the cutting point, and the more angled the tool with the handle down, the worse it gets.
I agree on all comments above. I switched to Robust tool rests about a year ago and I really like them.
I have Robo Hippy's rests (which are well made and do work) and have tried both Robust styles but I still prefer cast iron.

It depends on the project. I have one rest by bestwoodtools that is outstanding for my mini lathe. It is offset and since it's round you can flip it 180 degrees. That allows me to get inside and outside a bowl without ever changing the rest. It's about 9" long and the tool post is put on about 4" from one end. Other than that one I have a Robust mini 12" tool rest welded to a 1" post. That is by far my most used rest. I had it cut down to 10 3/4" for turning my mirror handles but it's so useful it stays on the lathe most of the time.
I have a couple of Robust rests for my 1642....never had an issue...wouldn't buy any others at this point
