I'm shopping for an interior curved bowl rest for my 1836. I like the Best Wood Tools rests, but I've been told that they don't have a post that will fit it. Their stock post is .001" too big. They've tried stock that is .0002" larger and smaller and still no luck. Apparently the clamp is too stiff to accommodate anything larger or smaller than .9975". I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I've searched the forum and not had any success. Thanks!

I had a tool rest that wouldn't fit one time. I moderate amount of filing solved the problem. Doesn't take long to take metal down a few thousandths.

Hmm, I was turning on a Laguna Revo lathe, and used my personal bowl rests which were on stock cold rolled 1 inch posts. No problems other than difficult to tighten them down enough so that they don't slip. I am used to the Robust wedge rather than the 'pinch' type like the Revo has. Standard set screw slips as well.

I'd like to know if you find anything, Steve. I'm about to pull the trigger on an 18/36.

You guys are making me jealous. I'm real close to an 18/36 myself too. I know they're on sale now, I'll probably pull the trigger next time they go on sale (which seems pretty regularly.)

This may be a low-tech solution (that you shouldn't have to do for the amount of money involved), but for only 0.001" difference, would a little careful application of sandpaper work well enough?

A fix that I have used for similar situations where a round bar was being clamped in a similar fashion is to open up the gap a bit by driving a flat blade screwdriver into the gap. Just go easy so that you don't crack the casting. it only needs to be opened a few thousandths. It looks like a designed-to-fail-from-fatigue-idea.

Hi Guys.
I bought a couple of Nova tool rests for my Laguna. Yup, they were a bit tight. I put some Yorkshire grit on the tool post and worked the tool post “round and round” in in the banjo. Worked like a champ. In about 15 minutes they worked perfectly. I then cleaned up both the tool post and banjo with some WD40 to remove any leftover grit. My original Laguna tool post still works perfectly too. As someone mentioned above, it is only a few thousandth’s so it doesn’t take a lot of work to make the posts fit.
