tool gloat

It is a fine tool but does have it's limits. When I first got mine I was disappointed in the depth I could go. I find it is excellent for up to about 8" and I really don't do much over that. Very well made tool.😀

The Monster Articulated Hollowing system is very nice. I have seen it at SWAT and was impressed by the solid construction.

I can understand Fred's reaction to the limited dept capability since I have turned hollowforms that deep without a hollowing rig, BUT the caveat is that the diameter was never more than six inches. I would guess that the Monster rig has enough rigidity to enable making a hollowform with a much larger diameter.

Another advantage of a hollowing rig is that it can be fitted with a laser guide.

I did have chatter problems with mine, probably 5 or more years old. I had a friend in our club tell me that I needed to tighten up the timkin bearings (think the spelling is right, but they are tapered, and the more you tighten up, the less play there is). It works a lot better now.

Timken is one of the largest companies that still makes bearings in the US. The timing of the company being mentioned is interesting because I found that they are involved in a proxy war over a hostile corporate takeover attempt from an unexpected direction -- not a competitor as one might assume, but instead by the California State Teachers Retirement System along with an activist investment advisory company called Relational Investors based in San Diego. CalSTRS believes that they will reap a financial benefit from breaking the company up because their pension plan is heavily invested in Timken.

I think that it was Timken that invented the two-piece tapered roller bearings in the early twentieth century. They also make every other imaginable type of bearing assembly.

What!

Ed - bought a new tool??? 🙂 Well, you will have to bring it over to Carl's on Wednesday nite and give us a demo on you new baby. We have got to see some of those hollow forms that you are going to be turning out now! We're not filled with envy, are we 😀 ?

Matt

can you believe I actually parted with some funds?
I would bring it to Carl's but it won't work on his Lathe...it is fitted for my 1642 so it will be too short for his Powermatic.

I'll get everyone to my place one week soon.

I have just recently bought the monster combo system, so far I have just used the articulating arm and hand held. I roughed out a vase that is about 8 1/2" deep and 6" dia. The last inch or so did make me a bit nervous. After reading this thread I measured the depth and also checked the Monster website. They recommend using a 1" bar to reduce chatter and vibration when working more than about 8" past the tool rest. I think I probably was about 10" past the tool rest. I am very pleased with the system and am really enjoying learning how to make hollow forms.

The vase has about 5/8" thick walls and 30% moisture. I have but it in a paper bag to dry and hope it doesn't crack!
