Took the plunge!

Congrats John, I think it's a worthwhile organization. The amount of information on the AAW website is incredible.
It's amazing how giving the woodturning community is.

John,

You've made a wise choice. The AAW is a great tool in your tool bag. I've really enjoyed it.

I made the mistake of not going to the Symposia for many years, only started going in 2015. That is a very worthwhile spend of one's time. The presenters are top notch and I have learned lots.

Welcome !

Kind regards,
Rich

Just joined AAW. Looking forward to the magazine and the other things that go along with the AAW membership.

Welcome aboard, John. As Jamie said, update your profile to add your member number and then I will update your forum privileges to allow you more storage space in the gallery. Regular members can use up to 10 MB and AAW members can use up to 25 MB.

If you haven't registered on the main AAW site yet, take a few minutes to do that and then you will have access to all of the members only benefits which includes the journal including all of the back issues as Fadi, AI, and Jamie have mentioned. I have downloaded several issues to my computer. This makes them more handy than having a lot of space in my bookcase filled up with magazines. Same deal as National Geographic where I had about 40 years worth taking up lots of space. New issues of American Woodturner are available online several days before you receive your printed copy in the mail.

John, from one newbie to another, welcome! So glad to have you here.

Just FYI, the Tennessee Association of Woodturners symposium is this January in Franklin. Fantastic opportunity to meet other turners, see demos and more.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'll add my AAW number to my profile. I do like a printed catalogue or magazine. Hard to maneuver the laptop in the bathroom. 😉 Looking forward to the advantages of the membership.
Mark, I'll check into the symposium in Franklin. For those who will be attending, Franklin was a major deciding battle in the Civil War. The wife and I spent a long weekend in Murfreesboro (Battle of Stones River site) with one day in Franklin. There are several houses that survived the battle and still have the bullet holes in the walls. The Lotz house has a burned spot on the wood floor where a cannonball pierced the ceiling and stopped on the main floor. It was in the middle of the battle with cannon and troops all around it. Carnton is a plantation outside of town where six generals were laid out on the front porch during the battle. There are guided tours of the houses. Murfreesboro has a nice visitors center on Medical Center Parkway, just east of I-24, Exit 76. The houses and plantation have guided tours that are worth the admission cost!
Go to www.legendsofamerica.com and click on History, I think it is, and go the the Civil War section. Should have a lot of info on the area.

Looked on my card which I printed off and looked at my receipt....don't see a member number. Help!

John, if you'll log on to the AAW site and go to the Profile Home page, you should see your number above your name in the body of the page and to the right of where your photo will be if you posted o e (or a placeholder is if you didn't). Mine is an eight digit number.

Also, just above your name on your membership card, you should see "Membership: XXXXXXX General", where the XXXXXX is where your member number should be unless they have changed the information on the card. When you receive the first printed copy of your journal, it will have your member number on the address label.

I printed off the membership card and there is not number on it. Will check the profile as you suggest.

I had a ten digit number given by AAW when I signed up for membership. Hope this number is correct. Still didn't see anything on my Profile.
Found the Profile Home and the number. Will change it. Thanks.
Looking forward to being a part of AAW.
Edit: Can't delete incorrect number to enter the correct AAW number. How do I correct it?

John I don't know how to help with this but if you send a message to Michael Seufer he perhaps can.

Send me a PM and I will get it straightened out. Michael is just a contract rapscallion who is tasked on an as-needed basis to implement specific software modifications, changes, upgrades, and backups. He doesn't provide day to day forum operational support. His main day job is in the IT department at Ohio State. Whenever I want to have any changes that involve specialized or root-level access from Michael I have to go groveling to the AAW with hat in hand and kneeling.

It has been changed. Maybe took a bit for the computer to process it. I guess I am now official.
Sign in office- To err is human; To really screw it up, you need a computer.

Thanks, Bill. I suppose I'm now committed to making something and putting it in the gallery. 😱

I updated your status to AAW member so you now have increased storage space in the photo gallery.[/QUOTE

By the way, rapscallion. Great word. Siri doesn't even bring it up in predictive text. Just "rap" this and that. Sheesh!

Also by the way, Bill, I wasn't calling you a support guy.
😳

Hey Bill, I also became a member back on Oct. 11th. I just added (what I think is) my membership number to my profile. I haven't recieved my first issue of their publication yet. Can you tell me how long it usually takes to get the hard copy?

I knew that word couldn't possibly apply to me. And when I think of our itinerant IT guy, the word "prop" rather than "support" seems to be the best fit. 😀

Definitely agree

The next issue will be December. Mail delivery for magazines in December is usually slow, but if you haven't received it by about the middle of the month then give the office a call at 877-595-9094. Even better, call them now just to touch base and get the straight skinny. Since you joined in October they might send that issue to you.

I'll update your forum status to AAW member. While you are waiting on the printed journal, you can view the current journal and all of the previous ones online.

Very useful to find out about manually adding AAW membership number to forum profile. I never knew I had to do this.

It isn't a requirement, but there is a benefit. AAW members can use up to 25 MB storage in the online gallery. Otherwise, the storage limit is 10 MB. I need to also mention that updating your profile with your AAW membership number doesn't automatically enable your increased storage allowance. You need to notify me by personal message (preferably), email, or phone and state your membership number. I usually verify your membership and then update your status.

Thanks Bill. It's not important to me that I receive the October issue, I just wanted to make sure that my name wasn't lost in the shuffle. If they don't send me the December issue, I'll call them at the number you listed for me. Thanks again.

I prefer to read the magazine electronically. If there's something I want to keep, I put copies of the pages I want to save into Evernote. Easy peasy.

I should have guessed that they actually have a FAQ page with real world questions. Here's what I found about receiving the journal:
Does my membership start on the anniversary date or is it annual? - AAW membership now operates on an anniversary cycle. Your membership will start with your join date and continue for one year. You will receive six issues of the American Woodturner journal, starting with the issue published after your join/renew date. It is published every other month and - depending on your join/renew date - your first issue will be received in 1-7 weeks. All membership benefits will be in effect for one year.

Gotcha Bill. As with most magazines subscriptions I've had, it takes forever to receive your very first issue.

Steve, John, & other interested parties:

You do realize that as a card-carrying member of AAW (you do have to print out the card yourself), you can obtain the October issue, the August issue, the June issue, etc.--all the way into the 1980's (electronically as PDF's).

I'm told that you can be a non-card-carrying member of AAW and still obtain electronic copies.

That, to me, is one of the outstanding values of membership in AAW--the back copies in electronic form, with a fairly decent index. The curated videos are also a wonderful new addition.

Now, all we need are drone mentors. Board members, are you listening to me? 😉

🙂

I would call it informed oratory.

With jokes

Informed oratory? We called it something else on the farm. 😵

RichColvin, tell me about EasyNote. Sounds like something useful as I like to save things from other websites.

I did notice my printable membership card when I was searching for my membership number. I didn't print it out because I didn't know what I would use it for.

I hear that using your membership card plus $4.95 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Well if you can get a cuppa coffee at Starbucks for 4.95, that must be a discount card. I'm a cheapskate. I admit it. 🙂
