Jeff,
I discovered this evening that the file size restriction for uploading image or PDF files is so severe that it was not worthwhile in my case. After spending about two hours working to squeeze an already small sized gif file just a bit more and still have it legible and then finally finding that the pixel restriction was the real killer, I tossed in the towel and put the file on my web site and placed a link to it. It may seem like a satisfactory solution except that I will not leave the image there indefinitely -- maybe three months at the most.

Currently the file size restrictions are:
80kb for photos on the photo gallery area
40kb for files attached to text articles in this section

PDFs tend to be large because the PDF format is a catchall method for including just about anything into one file. When graphics like jpgs or gifs are soaked up into PDFs, the PDF grows as if it had some super fertilizer added to it. It is more efficient to keep the graphics out of the PDFs if possible.

I think that if you have Adobe Acrobat (writer) then the graphics can be adjusted. I could be wrong. Adding graphics to documents which are native in another format like MS Word, then saving them as PDFs will generate large PDFs.

Bill just sent me an email and I reviewed the actual current settings for file sizes. Thanks for the prompt Bill.

I found that some of the maximum sizes were 20,000 bytes, and some were limited to 640 x 270 pixels (defaults). As a result I set each type to a new upper limit. The current sizes no longer have any pixel limitations. The current sizes are now:
  • 20 kb – psd, txt
  • 40 kb – gif, png, doc, jpe, jpeg
  • 80 kb – pdf
  • 100 kb - jpg
  • 200 kb – wmv, mpg

I distinctly remember there was a 40kb limit on jpg’s at some point. There may be multiple screens where I have to change the values. If you try to post a file which is within the values listed above, and it does not work, then please let me know.

…Jeff
