Hello
Looking on this forum, I found a listing from several years ago from Dennis Elliot where he was selling his Thompson lathe.
That post can be found here: https://www.aawforum.org/community/threads/thompson-lathe.18144/
Well, I am Jim Thompson's cousin and also the personal representative of his estate. Sadly, Jim passed away June 2024. When I found the entry by Mr Elliot, I was encouraged to see there was some interest in his Thompson lathe and thought perhaps we could find a new home for Jim's personal lathe. The lathe is currently in his shop in Greenville SC. This lathe comes equipped with the hydrostatic drive and is in working order.
In the photos listed here you will see the complete lathe as it is today. It is not as pretty as Mr Elliot's (in other words it is not painted) but the lathe is complete with all of Jim's tooling. I have also have the finishing sander that Jim used to put a finish on his bowls and that will be included along with all the tooling shown in the pictures. I am unfortunately not a wood turner so I have no idea of the proper terminology for all things about the lathe. If you are interested in the lathe and tell me what you want to know about, I will be more than happy to try to answer your questions. There is a cabinet next to the lathe and I found several attachments that I have no idea how to use. If those attachments are indeed part of the lathe, they will be included.
My goal is to find someone that might be interested in the lathe and would be willing to come pick it up. Jim stopped turning bowls quite a number of years ago because he became allergic to all the dust. Even though there was a proper ventilation system, Jim stopped turning and lathe did not get much use. I am optimistic there might be somebody reading this post that might be interested or perhaps know somebody that might be interested in Jim's personal lathe.
Finally, I want to express my greatest appreciation to the moderators of the forum for allowing me to make this post. If you have any questions, please post them, and I'll do my best to answer them.
You can contact me at grant@bowtie6.com. Price: $3000 OBO - and this includes the lathe, the tooling and the finishing sander.
One more thing: I was not able to upload all the photos. I have a blog, and I have a page with many more photos including the finishing sander, the tooling and more photos of the lathe. You can see those photos here:
Regards,
Joe
