Charlie, sometimes you are a man of few words. Perhaps, in this case, too few. Looks interesting. How about a run down on what it is and what it is for? If it weren't for that sponge thing, I would say that it is art, but now I am not so sure.

what it is?? i call this series a "cairn box"
i observed piles of rocks on trails in canyonlands and arches national parks, they are directional in nature.......a while back some euourpeon turners did a stone wall out of wood, i sort of decided that i liked their idea, and i liked the cairns, the title is This Way, my 3rd in the series, same name, same form, each different
so.....

art or functional.....depends on the user.....the sponge thing is maple burl....the basswood blue repesents a broken pot shard.....there are 2 boxes inside the form.....not quite the padoga box......sort of barbaric padoga box

i find the form fun.....i sort of copy Jimmie C. and Mark Baker techniques for turning the tops and bottoms but fall back on my straight edge scrapper for final cuts......as far as the pot shard....anything goes......different wood combinations make for interesting visual stimulie

excuse my misspellings

Thanks for clearing things up for me. The thing that I thought was a "sponge" is the basswood. To me it looked like one of those foam sanding pads I mistook the wood for the kind of medium density foam used in some sanding pads and I thought that the blue was the loop side of the Velcro fastener. I thought that the small piece on top of it was a handle. You'll have to forgive me for not being too sophisticated when it comes to letting art "speak" to me.

when i was in ft worth, i went to the stockyards, saw the cattle drive parade, and saw the white post that marked the chisholm trail.....not sure if yall got cairn markers to mark the trail in texas, the chisholm trail never spoke to me either, but it had a visual effect....it was pretty cool to think what it represented

It very clearly speaks to me. When I see that stake, I think of steak. 😀

No cairns were necessary for a cattle drive trail -- even a blind man could see the swath that a cattle drive leaves in the landscape.

Charlie,
I visited a cowboy museum in Corpus Christi. It could have been Florida history as easily as Texas history.
A lot of it was about the Spanish influence. Spanish brought the horses, cows, the cattle drive, and ranching to Florida in the 16 the century.
Brought cattle to Texas a bit later.
The Spanish vocabulary too including: ranch, rodeo, lariat, lasso, bronco, and even cow boy is a translation.

Your cairns looks like an interesting path. I hope you pursue it.

Google Michael Peterson you might get some ideas.
Michael was a prominent woodturner who is mostly a sculpter now and turns very little.

This is a link to an exhibit of his work:

Here is one photo of a Michael Peterson work.
Can't find the title. Most of the pieces are cut, probably with a chainsaw. One or two may have been turned.
None are boxes!

If I see the brand when I am served a steak, I'll just take it to the cobbler and have my boots resoled. 😀

Al, I just saw something in the corner of my shop that looks a lot like that photo. I wonder if I might just be an artist and don't realize it. And, to think that my wife said that my shop is cluttered --she just doesn't recognize artistic genius when she sees it. 😛

It is. I live in the middle of cattle ranches. The largest cattle ranch in the US is in Florida and about half of the top ten in terms of animals produce are in Florida..

The view from the shop the fence is on the property line. The Santa Gertrudis bull in the fairground, angus bull by the pines.
