The movers dropped my lathe on the motor. The casing is bent with the screw mounts torn. I'm afraid the motor is terminal, AND the drive pulleys no longer lines up with the center pulleys. I don't know if it is just the motor that is killed or if the whole headstock is blown and I don't know anyone yet in the Daytona Beach Florida area who can tell me...

HELP! (please)

Get a NEW HEADSTOCK & MOTOR - ASAP!!

I think I can see the micro-cracks in the headstock casting from here (Iowa)..... ...It also looks like the alignment of the spindle has changed, if even only a few thousanths out due to the EXCESSIVE PHYSICAL DAMAGE.

....I suppose that the moving company needs to get you a new headstock/motor combination ASAP right from Walter Meier/Powermatic parts- that's why these companies are insured. Get a claim in ASAP for the full replacement; don't settle for partial/parts-only replacement, and your time & effort to get it back to working condition.

Why mess around with wondering if there is hidden/ micro-damage beyond obvious trashing of your motor that is visually apparent? Cast iron doesn't heal. Neither does out-of-line bearings or spindles. Assume the headstock is blown and move on from there.

My opinion only, but a pretty darn good one, if I do say so myself.

It very well could be that the headstock is custom fit to the bed, and a replacement may not line up with the tailstock after the headstock replacement.

Sounds like the movers bought you a new 3520B, and they get to keep the dropped/damaged one.

I'm sure they have insurance and an adjustor will be along to follow up on your claim.

The movers are telling me I have no coverage - I'm going to have to fight like hell to get ANYTHING from them (but I will).

Its a SMALL company, they may "self insure" which is why they're reluctant to pay.

I may have to sue to get anything...

Sucks to be me.

sorry that happened George, curious to why gas prices are so much higher in Daytona than 30 miles in any direction

Update

:cool2: I have now turned on the lathe for over an hour on a decent sized piece of rosewood/sisso.
It LOOKS like I'll need nothing more than a new fan cover and to replace a single bent screw (less than $30.00).

😀YAY!😀

Great news!

George,

I'm very glad the damage wasn't as severe as you feared. Keep turning!

I was just thinking about you....
glad to know your up and turning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😀
