My Vicmarc VL 300 is finally here, and I can hardly wait to use it.

It is covered in packing grease??? or something of that nature, does anyone have suggestions how to clean the lathe without useing something that removes paint and everything but also does not require hours of elbow grease?

It is one massive peice of kit compared to the old Rockwell/Delta that it replaced. I have a lot of blanks stacked up and ready to go but that will have to wait til the lathe is cleaned and the wires run (wrong connecters in the wall).

If anyone has any pearls of wisdom about these babies that should be done before it is used please let me know. Thanks to all the guys who help all of us out here that still have much to learn about turning.

Mineral spirits or kerosene works well. good ventelation and lack of matches is good with flamables, but some like exitement. I will catch up with you soon with a stubby headed my way.

Congrats if you use a scraper to get the bulk of the grease off you can get a can of G96 Gun cleaner it will strip the remaining grease and condition the metal worked great for me.

Congrats on the Vicmarc 300......

If I were in the market for a lathe, that would be a top contender!

Wouldn't mind seeing some photos of it......
