The Hawaiian Calabash

Hope mine comes today

Trivia- there is a town in NC that is just over the SC state line. Calabash, NC is the center of the seafood fishery in the Carolinas. The town is noted for its number of seafood restaurants. Off the boat and on your table! Can't get any fresher than that.

Been there numerous times, John, and going back in October again. Ella's of Calabash was the original, and most famous I guess, where comedian Jimmy Durante made his famous remark after his meal when checking out, and tipping his hat....."Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!"

The Boundary House is a much newer, and fancier place, but generally has great food, especially if you like scallops and such. Their hot honey mustard/bacon salad dressing would make any wooden salad bowl proud to have it as its contents. I would like to see some of the shops there begin to carry wood turned items from local turners in the area, though!

Congrats to Emiliano on his article in the Journal.......looking forward to reading it when my copy arrives!

Just to clear up any potential confusion, the article is in "Woodturning" magazine (a British publication) and not in American Woodturner.

I have an electronic subscription to Woodturning so that I can view it on my iPad. The cost is much lower than getting the paper version, there's no delay in mailing, and no clutter.

Ah.....the fine print.....thanks Bill

Is there a way to view that article without subscribing? Since Emiliano is the author, maybe he can do that without any ethics violations......?

Congratulations to Emiliano.....😀

Contact the publisher (the GMC Group) about getting a freebie and explain your frugal nature to them. 😀 They probably won't be too sympathetic to your condition, but all isn't lost because you can buy single digital issues for only $2.99 or an annual digital subscription (13 issues) for $35.99. Click this link for more information: Woodturning Digital Subscription. Since Emiliano will be a regular contributing author, you might want to consider the annual subscription. With a digital subscription you can view the magazine on a mobile device like an iPad or on your desktop computer.

well my American woodturner came today and no E.....but Betty S. has the cover and David Fry has companion article....dilima.....Bourne or article??????????????

I first approached American Woodturner about some ideas. Several times... Got turned down every time... I contacted Mark Baker, my editor in Woodturning UK, and he immediately liked my ideas, who I am, where I live, how I write... I also write for Trap Shooting USA, Clay Shooting USA, and a Fishing and Hunting magazine in Argentina... Never give up on your dreams. If they turned you down, keep looking...
I already was a subscriber when I started writing for them... Odie, you can buy individual issues... I'm sending you a PM...
To clarify, I write for Woodturning Magazine out of the UK. I did write a few short stories for the Journal, and one collaboration piece with Alan Zenreich and Lyle Jamieson, about Live Remote Demos... Aloha from Maui

For goodness sake, don't sell your lathe or tools. Know what you mean, postal worker keeps delivering bills to the correct address.

Oh heck no, John........my lathe is what makes my little insignificant life worthwhile! The shop would be the most important thing in my life, if it weren't for my son! Since I retired, I've been living on a meager fixed income budget.......sucks, but I MUST have my financial priorities......and, I wouldn't have it any other way! Regardless of the financial realities......I'm reaching for what I think are the more important things in life!

This is my son, taken a few days ago, polishing one of his bowls:

Good day to you!

Oh.....by the way.......thanks to a friend, I've read Emiliano's article on the Hawaiian calabash bowls. Great article indeed! 😀
