I would like to compliment Carl Voss, Editor of the American Woodturner, for the continued improvement of our magazine during his tenure. I believe it to be an excellent magazine. There is balance in the topics and a variety of authors. My purpose in writing this, beyond complimenting Carl, is to state my support for his continued service. (I would hope that, coming from me, this is not the kiss of death 😱 😀 )

I hope that others will express their support for Carl also.

I agree. I think I mentioned that I just went through 2 boxes of American Woodturner going back to 2003 and it's easy and fairly dramatic the changes that Carl, and probably the board as well, have made to the magazine. It has to be really tough to find the right balance of articles for such a diverse group.
There are at least 10 or more woodworking magazines out there so they can steer the magazine toward a more select woodworking group such as amatuer, professionals, serious amatuers etc. EVen though they want as many readers as possible they still aim for one group. American Woodturner is about the AAW and has to try to please all of us. That means the beginner to the seasoned pro. Add to that the reporting that must be done on AAW activities, elections, etc and it has to be a tough job.
I think Carl has done a wonderful job. The layout and look of the magazine has improved a lot and I really like the longer articles that highlight a specific style, such as off center work, segmented work or ornamental work.

I would agree with Barbara and others, very fine mag. I would like to keep a collection of all my AAW magazines but some of them are so beat up by USPS they are marginally readable. Something should be done to cure the problem such as a plastic wrap or some sort of protection. I for one would support a modest increase in dues just for that purpose.

I like it

I have seen the steady improvements in the mag and would add my endorsement as well.

Carl Voss is directly responsible for the nice layout, easy to read type face and the good balance of articles.

Kudos sir, good job!

I agree. In my opinion, American Woodturner is an excellent magazine and has a good balance of articles that reflect the wide range of interests that it serves. I always enjoy getting the magazine.

I wholeheartedly agree that American Woodturner is a wonderful publication. Thank you, Carl, for your hard work and dedication.

In view of recent chatter I went back over the last few years of the Journal ( just see if I get the same one as everyone else 🙄 ).
Consistent improvement and quality production values.
Keep up the good work.

Mark.

I wholeheartedly agree! Carl has done a terrific job as editor of the Journal. I can't imagine why there would be any consideration or need for a reassessment with regard to his position. In my opinion his contract should have been automatically renewed. The improvement of the Journal since he has become editor is significant.

DON'T 'FIX' WHAT AIN'T BROKE!!

Going Somewhere?

I get the drift here that Carl's position in charge of the Journal is open to question. Why that would be the case I have no idea, but if this is the "bright" idea of someone, I suspect we have a dim bulb among us. The improvement in the Journal since Carl took over has been dramatic, from photography to lay-out to editing.

Since we also have a "beginners" thread running along side of this one, lets not forget that the Journal is a reflection of the interests of the entire membership. That given, I think Carl has done a fine job of trying to please all the people all the time while keeping the Journal well above the mag-rack tool-whore genre of other woodworking publications.

Now, if somebody somewhere has issues with Carl or the job he's doing, I'd like to see them posted here for any and all to see and comment on. In organizations that grow to the current size of the AAW, there always seem to be a few wanting to play "office politics".

That better not be the case underlying this thread.

Mark, can't say positively that this is 100% accurate, second or third source at best, Mr Voss, is under contract as a free lancer. As such his contract needs to be renewed, this is his renewal year. I personally can see no reason why his contract wouldn't be renewed, but who can say?

Simple objective

Mark,

#1. My simple objective was to encourage the renewal of Carl's contract. I regard this as a very POSITIVE thing to do. As Jake mentioned, if this is the renewal year, then now is a good time for those who are pleased with Carl's work to speak up. I wouldn't want our silence to be misunderstood.

#2.

Hi all,

The AAW journal has continually improved every year since I joined in 1991.

The current contract with Carl Voss is coming to its conclusion.

the AAW has solicited proposals for two items:
Journal editor and
Production of the journal.

While I would be disappointed if Carl were not he the successful bidder for editor, I am satisfied that the selection process will result in what is best for the AAW and the continued success of the journal.
Carl does a fine job, he is dedicated, he is absolutely reliable, and he has been treated very well by the AAW.

The competitive bid process is fundamental for the AAW to ensure the most bang for the buck for our members. The successful bidder will keep the journal improving as it has since 1991.

regards,
Al

Thanks for the update, Al.

Is there some place where the bid criteria are posted for public/member review? I don't seem to find them on the website, which actually indicates that there no positions "open."

Your mention of the economic issue does give some pause, however. It would be most unfortunate if the Journal were damaged by some "efficiency expert" trying to save a few scheckels, or, worse, by some self-promoting sales type outbidding but then not matching Carl's performance.

I remember the hassles we had with mailings going south until the production got straightened out. Almost cost me a year's membership dues. 😉

Thanks again

Mark,
The instructions for applying were on the web and I believe Ed posted a message on the forum as to how to get a request for proposal.
The closing date has passed.

I don't know any "efficiency experts" in the AAW.
I used to toil as an Operations Researcher but can no longer spell OR.

Any successful proposal would include a proven track record and price is just one of the criteria in evaluating a proposals.

Missed that, I suppose, because I wasn't job hunting last April. 🙂

May I suggest that the criteria include a really good reason to mess with success? 😉
