I've had two telemarketers call me this afternoon trying to get me re-subscribe to American Woodturner magazine. I was puzzled since I thought that was a perk of belonging to AAW. What really concerns me is how they got my name and phone number, had to come from AAW or whoever handles the mailing list, unless they got a copy of the directory and actually go through fishing for phone numbers.

Either way, how are they offering a subsription without somehow also working in cooperation with AAW. Hate to think the AAW board has approved selling of the membership roles.

Wood,

You can e-mail Carl Voss directly (address on the AAW pages under Staff) with your question. He is in charge of the Journal and would be the one best suited to answer your question without a lot of idyle conjecture.

I'll bet that it is the company that does the printing, labeling, mailing, etc. They are usually a mercenary lot. Unfortunately, this is the sort of thing that is hard to "undo". Also, when you go through one of these "fulfillment" houses, it normally is just a subscription sans membership.

I really doubt that is the case

Phishing?

The AAW does not solicit people to join the AAW by telephone.

This report concerns me very deeply.

You join the AAW because you think it's worth the money.

If this happens again please try to get a call back number and report the call to Mary Lacer in St Paul.

I will copy the rest of the Board to try to get some insight into this.

Thank you,

Angelo J Iafrate, President
American Association of Woodturners

Wood,

Accounting for Jeff's and Angelo's responses it appears that the calls were bogus. So, given that you are an AAW Member and so listed in last year's Resource Directory that may have been just thrown away, a few questions:

1. Did they ask for any personal info beyoond what is printed in the RD?
2. Credit Card?
3. Mother's maiden name?
4. Dog's name?
5. E-mail address?
6. Cup size?

Wouldn't be surprised if you've just been phished using an old RD as base data. Something that all members should be cautioned about.

We will be posting something on the homepage similar to the following:

Recently one or more people have received telephone calls to join the AAW or to subscribe to the AW Journal (magazine). Here are the facts:
- The AAW does not do any telemarketing or phone soliciting for membership.
- The AAW does not do any telemarketing or phone soliciting for magazine subscriptions.
- The AAW does not endorse any agents to solicit AAW membership or magazine subscriptions.

Any such telephone call you receive to this effect is a form of "phishing", where an unscrupulous person is trying to get your credit card or other personal information for their illegal usage. You should not give out your credit card number or personal information as a general policy unless you initiate the phone call to a known business.

Jeff, May I suggest an e-mail to that effect to all local chapter presidents with the suggestion that they notify the AAW in their area? I know it would be very expensive to give snail mail notice to members, but an e-mail chain might reach a substantial number.
